The students at the Frederick Leighton Elementary School competed for the opportunity to earn a position in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee regional. The top three finishers are advancing to the regional competition. They are John Alejandro, Ava Cloonan and Scotty Schladebeck.
Kingsford Park Elementary School Principal Mary Volkomer participated in the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! project. During “Young Readers Week” she had students write what it means to “Read to Lead.” Several students were recognized.
Two Sandy Creek High School football players have been placed on the 2013-14 all-state football first team, recently announced by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Linebacker Jake Benedict and lineman Matt Ennist were among nine players from the Section III Class D teams to receive the honor.
The third annual Run For Dennis 5k Run/Walk is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., March 15 to honor the memory of Oswego resident Dennis Pacheco (5/28/59-3/17/11), a victim of bladder cancer, it was announced by Jessica Newson, race director and Pacheco’s daughter.
The US Coast Guard Auxiliary and New York Sea Grant will offer the Young Boater Safety Certificate Training for ages 10-17 as part of the February 12-16 Central New York Boat Show at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Math Boot Camp is a compact and intensive professional development opportunity that is focused on the math that is in the Common Core Learning Standards. ‘Boot Camp’ will take place on January 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. and January 18 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Central Square Middle School.
During a Dec. 11 meeting, Hannibal school board members voiced their support for Superintendent Donna Fountain as they conducted her mid-year review. Board members indicated that they believed in Fountain’s leadership abilities and noted they have seen noticeable gains in the district during her tenure.
