John Palmer, a student at Lanigan Elementary School was recognized by Principal Jeff Hendrickson recently in a special ceremony for being committed to his school work and achieving academic success.

Fairgrieve Elementary School Principal Jean Ciesla recently recognized 110 students with Academic Excellence Awards. The students were nominated by their classroom teachers based on their academic standing and outstanding behavior and attitude in the classroom.

Third-grade students at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School have another resource to bolster their knowledge and vocabulary, thanks to a donation from the Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club. On Dec. 20, Rotarians Ellen Nowyj and LaVerne DeLand brought 124 dictionaries for each third-grader at the school.

The event marks the beginning process of the transition to high school and current eighth grade students will meet JCB staff and students and attend five informational sessions during their visit.

The votes will determine the winner of the 2014 Charlotte Award, which is named for the main character in E.B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web,” and aims to encourage students to read books and ultimately become life-long readers. It recognizes the authors and illustrators of such literature.

Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced Economic Development Funding awards through the New York State AmeriCorps Program. The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau will receive more than $128,000 in the upcoming year to support economic development priorities in the state.

A class in hand-painted silk scarves is being offered at Lakeside Artisans, 191 W. First St.,  on January 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. The instructor, Michele Southgate, will offer a class in painting silk scarves using a technique called Batik.

Employees at the Oswego City School District Education Center rallied around the holiday sharing program for the Fitzhugh Park Elementary School. They donated numerous items to the families of the east side school.
