Anti-bullying assemblies promote respect in APW schools

As part of Altmar-Parish-Williamstown school district’s initiative to eliminate bullying and promote respect for one another, guest speaker Kirk Smalley was on hand for two separate assemblies Oct. 16 to share his son’s story. Smalley’s son, Ty, took his own life May 13, 2010, after being suspended from school for retaliating against a fellow student who had been bullying him for more than two years.

Ruch keeps Volney students entertained with educational performance

Combining history and music, performer Dave Ruch kept Volney Elementary students entertained during several educational activities Wednesday in the school library. Ruch — who has been billed as equal parts historian, musician, educator, folklorist, comedian and entertainer — engaged the students with music, stories about the Iroquois and Westward expansion, and through sing-alongs.

ready for a forever homeThis year the annual Port of Oswego Chapter of Ducks Unlimited fund raising banquet/auction will be held on November 6. Ducks Unlimited is the World’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continuing disappearing waterfowl habitats. The cost to restore one acre of wetlands increases yearly. The DU banquet/auction raises money to preserve wetlands in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Do Cats Grieve?

My six-year-old female cat, Sophie, has been with me since she was a kitten. Her best buddy, Squiggles, passed away last year at the age of nineteen and I don’t think that Sophie has really gotten over it. Do cats “grieve?” As much as I adore her, I am just not home that much because I work during the day and I worry that she is now bored and lonely
