Cayuga CC to holds its 59th Annual Commencement this Sunday

Cayuga Community College will recognize 630 graduates during its commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday in Spartan Hall, 197 Franklin St.  The Commencement addresses will be delivered by two members of the Class of 2013 who are SUNY Chancellor Award for Student Excellence recipients: Catherine Faith Fanning of Waterloo and Brian M. Knapp of Fleming.

Fort Ontario Hosts Post Cemetery Tour May 18

Commemorate Armed Forces Day, May 18, by coming to Fort Ontario State Historic Site on our seasonal opening day and attending a walking tour of the Post Cemetery. The Post Cemetery presents a cross section of those who served and died at Fort Ontario from the French and Indian War through World War II; it contains the bodies of 77 individuals, including soldiers, officers, wives, children and one soldier’s mother.

Dr. Jouraeva Speaks May 15 on Trees and Carcinogens

Chemistry professor Dr. Venera Jouraeva will talk about her research on  trees and their effect on air quality and reduction of carcinogens in the environment at a meeting of Oswego Tree Stewards on May 15 at 7 p.m. at Oswego City Hall (third floor). Dr. Jouraeva is an assistant professor of chemistry at Cazenovia College where she teaches chemistry and environmental science.

Volney Storytellers Share Tall Tales and Fables

Volney Elementary School fifth grade student Mackenzie Birdsell shares her story, “The Giant’s Toe,” during the grade-level storytelling competition in her school’s library. Mackenzie was one of twelve fifth grade students vying for the opportunity to represent Volney Elementary School at the Fulton City School District Storytelling Festival on May 22 at 6 p.m. at G. Ray Bodley High School.Students from grades three through six at Volney Elementary School competed this week for the honor of representing their school at the upcoming Fulton City School District Storytelling Festival. Many hours of practice went into not only memorizing each story, but also working on getting the pauses, facial expressions and gestures that brought them to life exactly right.
