Governor Declares State of Emergency over Storm’s Impending Arrival
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency in New York in preparation for the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy, which may hit New York State in the coming days. A state of emergency mobilizes resources to local governments that otherwise are restricted to state use only and suspends regulations that would impede rapid response.

Russian Visitors Learn, Share Educational Ideas at Fulton CCC
On Wednesday, Cayuga Community College’s Fulton Campus welcomed six visitors from Russia who are here as part of a cultural exchange program through the International Center of Syracuse. They discussed the differences and similarities between their countries’ educational systems, focusing on what they had in common and how they could help each other in the future.

Fulton Moves Ahead With Plans to Annex Granby Land into the City
Fulton city lawmakers Tuesday decided to keep moving forward with plans to take land from the town of Granby over the town’s objections. Two votes, on an environmental declaration and on a petition to the state to allow the annexation, were unanimous. The battle begins, and could end up in a state court.

“The Laramie Project” takes a straight-on look at the aftereffects of a real hate crime — the torture and murder of a gay young man in Laramie, Wyoming. It’s a bold choice for a high school play and contributing writer Janel Sullivan finds that the young cast is up for the challenge of showing how a community tries to find love in the ashes of hate.
