Leighton Elementary School’s top spellers battled it out head-to-head Thursday afternoon to determine who would be moving on to the district-wide spelling bee in March. When the dust had settled, Yavuz Damkaci earned first place honors. The sixth grader’s winning word was cyclops.
Mayor Billy Barlow’s proposed comprehensive reforms to the city’s HUD Section 8 Rental Assistance Program were approved by the Common Council by a 6-1 vote on Monday night. Council President Eric VanBuren cast the lone nay vote. “After hearing the plan would be adopted then submitted and then brought back for revisions, it seems like we’re putting the cart before the horse,” he explained.
State Police Investigators with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are seeking the public’s assistance with identifying a male and female suspect wanted for burglary in the town Oswego. On November 17, at 3:08 a.m., the pair entered Malone’s Irish Hideaway on Barker Road and stole bottles of liquor.
The closure has been extended by an extra week due to a delay in construction. The Oswego and Volney locations will continue to be open extra days while repairs are being made to the Hannibal facility.
A Scriba resident who purchased property in October recently received solicitations from two companies based in Albany, NY. More than two dozen concerned citizens spent their lunch hour Friday (Dec. 8) holding an informational picket outside Oswego City Hall. The group sought to highlight the cons of the proposed GOP tax plan.
Some, armed with signs, went into City Hall to see if anyone was working in Congressman John Katko’s office. No one was working and the office was locked. Later, they patrolled the west side of West First Street to get their message out to pedestrians and motorists.
The volunteers who maintain snowmobile trails are just as busy in the summer with pre-season snowmobile preparations as they are in the winter – brushing trails, fixing and replacing bridges, working with landowners and securing the permits and permissions needed to continue to use trails on state lands. There may be no snow, but a club’s work never ends.
Governor Andrew Cuomo today (Dec. 8) announced the completion of a $14 million project that rehabilitated nearly four miles of Route 104 in western Oswego County. “Route 104 is a vital corridor for Oswego County and the Niagara Frontier, supporting commerce, tourism and recreational opportunities for the entire region’s economy,” Governor Cuomo said. “This project modernizes and upgrades the highway while improving safety for all of the motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians who depend upon this critical roadway.”
He was charged with Juvenile Delinquency for acts, if committed by an adult, would constitute the charges of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, a class D felony; two counts of first-degree rape, a class B felony; two counts of first-degree criminal sex act, a class B felony and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class A misdemeanor.
On Thursday (Dec. 7) at 2:08 p.m., sheriff’s deputies arrested Donald E. Schopp, 56, of 128 Tug Hill Road, Oswego, for first-degree sexual abuse, a class D felony. He allegedly had sexual contact with the victim being less than 13 years of age.
