Aerial Spraying Helped; EEE and WNV still active in Oswego County

Initial surveillance shows that aerial spraying of Toad Harbor Swamp on Aug. 28 was effective in reducing the number of mosquitoes, but people should continue to be vigilant about protecting themselves from mosquito bites, Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang said today (August 29). “The county and state health departments continue to monitor mosquito and mosquito-borne virus activities in Oswego County,” said Huang.

Record Applications, Diversity Mark Latest High Points For SUNY Oswego

As fall classes get under way at SUNY Oswego, the college has greeted the most diverse class of new freshmen in its history. A record year for applications at Oswego — more than 11,700 — produced a Class of 2021 of nearly 1,500 students, the fifth straight year freshmen enrollments have topped 1,400, based on preliminary figures from Dan Griffin, director of admissions.

Council OK’s Oswego’s 2018 Budget

At Monday night’s Common Council meeting, the 2018 budget was approved 5-2 with councilors Pat McLaughlin and Shawn Walker voting no. Adding funding to the budget for upgrades for the Kingsford Park playground was the stumbling block. The $45,715, 532 spending plan carries a tax increase of 3.48 percent. The tax rate per $1,000 assessed value is 15.67.

Aerial Spraying of Toad Harbor Area is Completed

Aerial spraying of portions of the towns of Hastings, West Monroe and Constantia was completed between 6:15 and 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28. Oswego County contracted with Duflo Spray-Chemical Inc. from Lowville to conduct the aerial spraying of about 10,000 acres of the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp near the north shore of Oneida Lake to reduce Eastern equine encephalitis virus, which is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Oswego County Will Conduct Aerial Spraying Tonight

The Oswego County Health Department plans to conduct aerial spraying of approximately 10,000 acres of land in the Big Bay – Toad Harbor Swamp area in the towns of Hastings, West Monroe and Constantia between 6:15 and 9 this evening (August 28). The area is bounded by U.S. Route 11 in Central Square to the west; NYS Route 49 to the north; up to but not including the village of Constantia to the east; and the shoreline of Oneida Lake to the south.

Oswego County’s Visitor Spending Saw Record High in 2016

Oswego County’s tourism industry set new records for economic impact, direct spending and tourism employment in 2016, County Legislator Roy Reehil, chairman of the County Legislature’s Economic Development and Planning Committee, announced. “From 2015–16, visitor spending in Oswego County increased 6.8 percent to $146,013,000, with tourism employment growing 8.5 percent,” said Legislator Reehil.

Somber Anniversary In Port City History

It was 60 years ago on Aug. 18 that three workers lost their lives during one of the final phases of the construction of Oswego’s water intake tunnel. A fourth man, one of the dozens of volunteers who mounted a rescue attempt, also died after being overcome by gas fumes in the tunnel. Rescue attempts were slowed because volunteers had to wade through thigh-high water for the first 1,000 feet or so of the tunnel.

State Denies Scriba’s Equalization Rate Challenge

The State Board of Real Property Tax Services voted Wednesday (August 23) to adopt its staff’s recommendation to set the 2017 equalization rate for the town of Scriba at 86.2%. Since 2002, the town of Scriba has maintained a 100% equalization rate. The state board’s decision will effectively result in an increase in taxes to be paid by Scriba residents, town officials announced. Based on estimates, the owner of a property in Scriba valued at $100,000 will see an increase in their school taxes in October by as much as $300 over last year’s amount.
