Tall Ships Event Request Sails To Council

A request regarding the Festival of Ships event floated to the full council for consideration. At Monday’s Physical Services Committee meeting, Justin Rudgick, Community Development Director, introduced the request from Mercedes Niess of the Maritime Museum regarding the tall ship event to be held on July 21-23, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the West First Street Pier. “It’s a fantastic event,” Rudgick told the committee.

Jesse Corfield, a 2014 SUNY Oswego graduate, is among a select group of U.S. citizens chosen to teach abroad in the upcoming academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Starting in February, he plans to teach English at a university in Brazil under the prestigious program. World-Traveling SUNY Oswego Alumnus Earns Prestigious Fulbright

SUNY Oswego alumnus Jesse Corfield plans to continue his dedication to education and international service through teaching English in Brazil via the prestigious U.S. Fulbright Student Program. The 2014 graduate with a Spanish major and linguistics minor is a Fulbright finalist, a candidate who has been offered a Fulbright U.S. Student grant, contingent upon host country approvals, medical clearance and submission of all required grant documents.

Ban On Using Glyphosate On City Owned Property Tabled

Assistant City Attorney Tom Reynolds, on behalf of Councilor John Gosek, requested discussion regarding a proposed local law regarding the restriction of the use of herbicides that contain glyphosate on city owned property. The purpose of the law is to protect the public health, Reynolds explained. However, the committee tabled the plan in order to further discuss it.

Oswego County Legislators Act to Preserve Jobs at Nuclear Plants

The Oswego County Legislature continues to advocate for the region’s nuclear power industry and at its June meeting urged defeat of measures in the state Assembly and Senate that would repeal the Clean Energy Standard. The state Legislature has adjourned for the season without acting on the bills. However, members of the Oswego County Legislature are concerned the issue could re-surface when the state Legislature re-convenes.

Gov. Cuomo Announces Multi-Agency Actions To Enforce No Wake Zone Along Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River Shoreline

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today (July 2) announced ramped up efforts to enforce no wake zones along the Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River shoreline this weekend. Multiple state agencies are deploying additional resources to assist with local enforcement efforts, including a total of 20 watercraft and 42 law enforcement officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Division of Military and Naval Affairs, and State Police.

State Police Investigate Fatal ATV Crash in Orwell

The investigation has determined that at approximately 10:50 p.m., a 27-year-old man was operating an ATV eastbound on Gay Road when the ATV exited the roadway and struck a trailer, which was parked off of the roadway, at the end of the dead end street. The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending family notification.

Alan Jones Denied Parole

This morning (June 30, Oswego County District Attorney Gregory Oakes spoke with an official at the Wallkill Correctional Facility, who advised that the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has DENIED the parole application for Alan Jones. In response to the decision, District Attorney Oakes stated, “I am thankful to everyone who wrote the parole board and joined me in opposing Jones’s release. I am relieved that the parole board listened to our voices, and I’m grateful that justice continues to be served.”
