Rabid Skunk Found in Minetto

The Oswego County Health Department reported today (May 26) that a skunk has tested positive for rabies in the town of Minetto. A dog which came in contact with the skunk was up-to-date on its rabies shots and was given a rabies booster shot as a required precaution. There was no human exposure. “The rabies virus is widespread in Oswego County and across the region this spring, and we are continuing to receive new reports,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director.

Captain Smith Earns Leadership Award

Army Capt. Catherine E. Smith has been named a recipient of the 2016 Gen. Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award 2016. She is one of 13 active-duty commission officers to receive this honor. Capt. Smith is the daughter of Debra and Frederick Smith of Henderson, N.C. (formerly of Oswego). She is a 2003 graduate of Oswego High School.

Governor Announces $5 Million In Small Business Grants Available For Those Impacted By Lake Ontario Flooding

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced up to $5 million in grants available for small businesses that have experienced physical damage or loss as a result of the flooding in communities along Lake Ontario. The program provides up to $20,000 to small businesses to support the repair or replacement of damaged or destroyed real property and other tangible assets, including equipment, furniture, fixtures, supplies and inventory.

Gov. Cuomo Announces Acquisition Of More Than 6,000 Acres Of Protected Land In Oswego County

Governor Andrew Cuomo today (May 24) announced the state has acquired more than 6,000 acres of protected lands in Oswego County, the largest additions to state lands in Central New York in 45 years. These areas include approximately 2,825 acres of lands along the Salmon River, an internationally acclaimed fishing destination, and 3,236 acres of working forestland in the nearby towns of Redfield and Orwell.

County to Participate in Statewide STOP-DWI Memorial DAY Crackdown Enforcement Effort

Oswego County STOP-DWI Coordinator Robert Lighthall announced that Oswego County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving. The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on May 26 and will end on May 30. Memorial Day week is historically a deadly period for impaired driving. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional beginning of summer.

Oswego County Historical Society Dedicates Marker For Richardson Theater

Amid the hustle and bustle along East First Street Tuesday afternoon, the Oswego County Historical Society harkened back to the days when the Port City was a Mecca for the theater. Historical society members, city officials and other held a ceremony, dedicating a roadside marker recalling the site of the Richardson Theater. The program was hosted by Justin White, president of the society, and Rick Sivers, president of the Oswego Players and historical society board of trustees member.
