Local Heroes Spreading Warmth

Recently, some sharp-eyed walkers have spotted mittens, scarves and other cold weather apparel seemingly growing out of trees. It’s the second year of Gloves with Love, a program by the Oswego Federal Credit Union and Oswego County Opportunities. The Oswego Fiber Arts Studio Group has also implemented its Random Acts of Warmth and Kindness program to help the needy stay warm.

NYS Winter Fishing Tournament Continues through February

Anglers fishing the 2017 NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament can visit three local businesses – All Seasons Sports and Salmon River Sports Shop in Pulaski, and App’s Bait and Tackle in Cleveland – to weigh in their catches. Considered the largest winter fishing tournament ever conducted in NY state, the NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament continues through the end of February.

Committee Plans To ‘Dispose’ of Zombie Property

A blight in the Fifth Ward will soon be gone. At Tuesday’s Physical Services Committee meeting, Kevin Caraccioli, city attorney, requested consideration from the Common Council to return specific real properties to the prior owners who lost title due to tax foreclosure. And the recommended funding the purchase and tear down of a zombie property on West Fifth Street.

State Police Investigating Fatal Accident in Schroeppel

At about 8:20 a.m. today (January 19), State Police patrolling Bankrupt Road in the town of Schroeppel came upon a gray Hyundai Sonata off the roadway
against a tree with heavy front end damage. Inside the vehicle, they located the driver and sole occupant, 62 year-old Richard T. Bray, of Syracuse.

Oswego Council Eyes Paperless Meetings

At Tuesday night’s committee meeting, Councilor Robert Corradino opened a discussion regarding paperless agendas for committee and council meetings. The move would save money, make things move quicker and easier as well as free up the city employees that have to deal printing hundreds of pages each week for the agendas.

Winona Forest Hosts Stone Wall Snowshoe Walk and Race Jan. 28

“Winona Forest is known for its deep snowfalls and winter wonderland appearance, and the Winona Stone Wall has evolved into one of the Northeast’s premier snowshoe events,” said Matt Westerlund, president of Winona Forest Recreation Association. “Shoers can choose from a 5K citizens distance, where they can race, run, or walk with friends, or the 15K championship course.”
