Oswego County has something for everyone to enjoy as they celebrate the nation’s Independence Day and the county’ bicentennial. Bring the whole family out to join the fun on Saturday and Sunday.
On Wednesday State Police stopped a vehicle on West Street in Syracuse that was operating with three small children in the backseat without proper child safety restraints. Investigation at the scene revealed the operator, Sherita Dana, 33, from Hannibal, and passenger Sabrina Johnson, 30, from Fulton, were allegedly in possession of heroin, Suboxone without a valid prescription, marijuana, and hypodermic needles.
In preparation for 2016 Independence Day Parade, to be held on Sunday July 3, the Oswego Police Department wishes to announce the following traffic advisories and general information:
“I am so proud of (Safe Haven). It is one of the great pieces of Jewish heritage in this country, and indeed the world,” Congressman Katko said. “When I was in Israel last year, I mentioned it to some of the folks in the Israeli Cabinet and they were really fascinated by it.” Fort Ontario and Safe Haven are “a great jewel of our area,” he added. His efforts to raise the site to national park status continue to move forward.
Independence Day, unfortunately, is one of the busiest days of the year for firefighters. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more fires are reported on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year, and two out of five are fireworks-related incidents. Oswego Fire Department Chief Jeff McCrobie advises that the best way to enjoy fireworks and prevent injury is to watch a professional show.

The Children’s Museum of Oswego (CMOO) is kicking off its Build, Play, Grow Campaign this week with more than $275,000 in gifts and pledges already received. This morning (June 27), Entergy personnel at its James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Scriba identified the source of oil released to the site’s discharge canal on Sunday and stopped the flow. While this oil contains no PCBs, is non-radioactive, non-hazardous and has low potential health effects, any unintended release to Lake Ontario is not in accordance with Entergy’s standards.
Funding announced Friday (June 24) is part of a $14 million capital fund appropriation in the 2015 State Budget for construction and renovation of public libraries and public library systems in New York State.
Oswego County continues to commemorate its bicentennial with events and activities throughout the area. Kick off this month’s festivities with a grand bicentennial celebration over Independence Day weekend.
“Walt Julian’s (Ross) World, this is his ‘Forever 10 Party’ to raise (childhood) cancer awareness,” Ruth Wallace, organizer, said. Julian was in the hospital and unable to attend last year’s event. His mother, Kristi, shared the activities with him via a video chat on her phone. This year, she shared the 10-year-old’s final wishes with the hundreds that descended on Breitbeck Park. It was a simple, yet powerful, wish. “Help others.”
