“I am so proud of (Safe Haven). It is one of the great pieces of Jewish heritage in this country, and indeed the world,” Congressman Katko said. “When I was in Israel last year, I mentioned it to some of the folks in the Israeli Cabinet and they were really fascinated by it.” Fort Ontario and Safe Haven are “a great jewel of our area,” he added. His efforts to raise the site to national park status continue to move forward.
Independence Day, unfortunately, is one of the busiest days of the year for firefighters. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more fires are reported on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year, and two out of five are fireworks-related incidents. Oswego Fire Department Chief Jeff McCrobie advises that the best way to enjoy fireworks and prevent injury is to watch a professional show.
A two-story Cloud Climber, water table, aluminum factory and other familiar sites are about to become a reality in the heart of Oswego. The Children’s Museum of Oswego (CMOO) is kicking off its Build, Play, Grow Campaign this week with more than $275,000 in gifts and pledges already received. CMOO is also pleased to announce its leadership team for the campaign
This morning (June 27), Entergy personnel at its James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Scriba identified the source of oil released to the site’s discharge canal on Sunday and stopped the flow. While this oil contains no PCBs, is non-radioactive, non-hazardous and has low potential health effects, any unintended release to Lake Ontario is not in accordance with Entergy’s standards.
Funding announced Friday (June 24) is part of a $14 million capital fund appropriation in the 2015 State Budget for construction and renovation of public libraries and public library systems in New York State.
Oswego County continues to commemorate its bicentennial with events and activities throughout the area. Kick off this month’s festivities with a grand bicentennial celebration over Independence Day weekend.
“Walt Julian’s (Ross) World, this is his ‘Forever 10 Party’ to raise (childhood) cancer awareness,” Ruth Wallace, organizer, said. Julian was in the hospital and unable to attend last year’s event. His mother, Kristi, shared the activities with him via a video chat on her phone. This year, she shared the 10-year-old’s final wishes with the hundreds that descended on Breitbeck Park. It was a simple, yet powerful, wish. “Help others.”
“I have found throughout the past four years that it is crucial not to let a number define you,” Valedictorian Jenna Ballard said. “Your class rank, grades, test scores, et cetera, do not reflect how smart you are. They do not, and should not, be taken as an indicator of how successful you can become, and do not dictate what you can and cannot do.” “My advice to this class is that whatever you choose to do, strive to be extraordinary. Be passionate, be confident, be great. There is greatness in all of us,” Jacob Gerber, salutatorian, said.
Fire hydrant testing will resume on June 27 in the Sixth Ward and continue for much of the summer and possibly into the fall. Oswego Fire Department personnel will be working on testing the flow rates of these fire hydrants, identifying maintenance issues, and painting the tops with the appropriate color coding.
