Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium Schedule Announced

The symposium schedule featuring nine respected historians from across the U.S. and Canada has now been finalized. Fort Ontario State Historic Site Superintendent Paul Lear, chairman of the Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium Committee, will emcee the event and open the program each day.

Committee Debates, Approves Various Events

At its meeting Monday night, the Physical Services Committee gave favorable recommendations to several requests for use of public for upcoming events. However, one councilor took exception to the event coordinators advertising the events and seeking participants prior to ever coming to the council to request use of public space to hold the event(s). If, for some reason, the request was denied, it would make the city look like the bad guy, he said.

Legislature Extends Call-N-Ride Service for Seniors 60 and Older

The Oswego County Legislature has approved an agreement with Oswego County Opportunities to provide free transportation services to senior citizens aged 60 and older through the “Call-N-Ride” program for another year. OCO operates the Call-N-Ride program for “curb-to-curb” transportation to elderly and disabled people within Oswego County who don’t live on a public transportation route.

Route 104’s Potential Makeover Unveiled

Beautifying the main corridor is a top priority of Mayor William Barlow’s. The multi-year project will encourage private investment in homes and businesses as well as increase property values and it will increase business, city officials said. Some of the things they will consider going forward with the plan are sidewalks, bike lanes, paved shoulders, bus lanes, pedestrian amenities, traffic calming areas and more. Work could begin in early 2017.

Women Veterans Are Encouraged to Apply for Honor Flight

Oswego County women who served in the military during World War II, the Korean War or the Viet Nam War have the opportunity to take part in a special Honor Flight trip to the nation’s capital through the Albany area Patriot Flight program. Patriot Flight is a hub of the National Honor Flight Network that serves the Albany area. The May 14 flight is designated for women veterans from World War II through the Viet Nam War and is open to Oswego County residents.

Senate Calls For Increased Funding To Fight Rabies Epidemic

Following the discovery of seven rabid skunks in the city of Watertown and recent cases of potential human exposure in St. Lawrence and Oswego counties, State Senator Patty Ritchie announced the addition of $875,000 in new funding in the Senate’s budget plan to fight and prevent the deadly disease. “We did see rabies activities earlier this year than in past years and attributed it to unusually warm winter that kept many wild animal active,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director.

Mumps Suspected at University of Buffalo

The University of Buffalo is working with the Erie County Health Department to investigate suspected cases of mumps among a small group of college students that attend the university. “We want the community to be aware of the spread of mumps in other areas if they are planning to do any traveling in the near future,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director.

Laker Women’s Basketball Star Rebounds From Cancer

Less than a year after fighting to improve with the Oswego State women’s basketball team on the hardwood of Max Ziel Gymnasium, Rachael Windhausen was fighting for something different – her life. Rachael was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after a series of tests and scans over the summer, changing her focus from post moves and jump shots to chemotherapy treatments and survival.
