Oswego County Land Bank Corporation Meets to Elect Officers

The newly-formed Oswego County Land Bank Corporation met March 21 to elect officers and officially develop and approve policies and procedures. The corporation is a nonprofit entity whose purpose is to facilitate the return of vacant, abandoned and tax delinquent properties to productive use. Oswego Man Identified As Victim of Mexico Crash

UPDATED: The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office says 51-year-old Michael J. Fredette of Oswego was pronounced dead at University Upstate Hospital on March 26 following a rollover crash in Mexico Saturday evening. The driver, 51-year-old Douglas B. Horton of Mexico, was arrested for driving while intoxicated, deputies said.

Appeals Court Upholds City’s Ownership Of Cahill Building

The New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department, unanimously affirmed a lower court ruling that dismissed a legal claim by local developer Thomas Millar asserting his ownership of the historic Cahill Building. The appellate ruling means that the city of Oswego retains title to the property located along the Oswego River, Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (March 26).

Jessica is one of more than 30 women who have volunteered to participate in an innovative new program, “Smoke Free for My Baby and Me.” This initiative is aimed at reducing smoking rates among pregnant women through clinic-based best practices, peer support, monitoring and incentives such as free diapers.

‘Smoke Free For My Baby and Me’ Program Marks Successful First Year

Nearly three-quarters of the women who participated in the “Smoke Free for My Baby and Me” program were able to quit smoking, the Oswego County County Health Department reported today (March 25). The project, which was implemented last May, is a partnership among several community agencies. Initial findings reveal a 73 percent success rate among participants to quit smoking.

2 Housing Rehabilitation Grants Totaling $450,000 to Aid Homeowners in Oswego County

The New York State Affordable Housing Corporation recently approved two grants in the amounts of $250,000 and $200,000 to the Oswego Housing Development Council to help finance home improvements for 30 single-family homes in Oswego County. The grant is part of a program designed to stabilize and preserve the county’s existing housing stock.

Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium Schedule Announced

The symposium schedule featuring nine respected historians from across the U.S. and Canada has now been finalized. Fort Ontario State Historic Site Superintendent Paul Lear, chairman of the Oswego International War of 1812 Symposium Committee, will emcee the event and open the program each day.

Committee Debates, Approves Various Events

At its meeting Monday night, the Physical Services Committee gave favorable recommendations to several requests for use of public for upcoming events. However, one councilor took exception to the event coordinators advertising the events and seeking participants prior to ever coming to the council to request use of public space to hold the event(s). If, for some reason, the request was denied, it would make the city look like the bad guy, he said.

Legislature Extends Call-N-Ride Service for Seniors 60 and Older

The Oswego County Legislature has approved an agreement with Oswego County Opportunities to provide free transportation services to senior citizens aged 60 and older through the “Call-N-Ride” program for another year. OCO operates the Call-N-Ride program for “curb-to-curb” transportation to elderly and disabled people within Oswego County who don’t live on a public transportation route.
