New emergency notification sirens installed by Exelon Generation and Entergy Nuclear have gone into service following approval by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Dale Currier, director of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office, said today (Feb. 24). A new siren testing schedule is also now in effect.
“We have not received a definitive proposal from the state of New York since our settlement talks ended in late 2015. What we’ve read in the NYPSC’s press release today doesn’t provide us with any more certainty than we had in late 2015,” said Mike Twomey, vice president of external affairs for Entergy EWC. Tuesday’s press release by the New York PSC will not change Entergy’s decision to close the FitzPatrick plant, he added.
Assemblyman Will Barclay made the following statement today after the Public Service Commission announced today that they have expedited a plan to seeing that FitzPatrick is refueled in conjunction with the Clean Energy Standard.
The FitzPatrick nuclear power facility could be financially sound and ready for refueling as soon as June under an expedited rescue plan proposed today by the NYS Public Service Commission. In addition to proposing the plan and commencing the necessary public comment process, the Commission also repeated its offer to work cooperatively with the facility’s owner to take steps necessary to keep the plant operating beyond this year.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a full day of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and workshops on winter recreation at Base Camp Oswego Feb. 27. The free event will take place at Oswego County’s Camp Hollis, 40 Health Camp Road in the town of Oswego.
Lack of city support puts some events in jeopardy. At Monday’s Common Council meeting, by a 4-3 vote, councilors voted not to provide city support for some events planned by Cre8 Studios. Organizers say they aren’t certain now whether they will move forward with the events.
SUNY Oswego alum, Linda Cohn set the record for most broadcasts anchored at SportsCenter with her edition airing Sunday on ESPN. Cohn graduated in 1981 from SUNY Oswego, where she also played on the women’s ice hockey team and has worked with SportsCenter since July of 1992.

The Syracuse Police Department has activated the New York State AMBER Alert and is investigating a child abduction that occurred near ValleyDrive, in Syracuse, NY at about 10:57 PM on 2/20/2016. Anyone with any information on this abduction is asked to call the Syracuse Police Department at (866)N Y S-AMBER or dial 911 to provide information on a report or sighting.
The Oswego Fire Department is in the process of making sure that all of the hydrants in the city are clear of snow and ice. If you see a hydrant in need of shoveling, call the Oswego Fire Department at 343-2161.
