Flu season is in full swing. If you or your loved ones have not received a flu vaccine yet, the Oswego County Health Department advises you to get vaccinated today. Flu activity is unpredictable, however, cases of flu are widespread in Oswego County and across New York State. The flu vaccine is readily available at the Oswego County Health Department, area pharmacies and local health care providers.
Melt away the “winter blues” on February 7 for the 10th annual Warm Up Oswego Festival. The hottest winter festival in CNY is lead this year by the Oswego Network of Entrepreneurs and promises the best festival yet. “We will have all the great activities that fest-goers have come to love, with a new footprint for the festival!” said Nathan Emmons, festival chair.
A collaboration of Syracuse Stage, ArtRage Gallery and SUNY Oswego and its Metro Center keys on the 50th anniversary of the march from Selma to Montgomery, the aftermath of apartheid and recent searing national events in order to frame a community-wide series of arts presentations and conversations about race and identity starting this month.
Park visitors are invited to enjoy a winter wonderland snowshoe hike at Selkirk Shores State Park from 5 to 7 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Beginning at the skier parking area, lanterns will line a gradual self-guided mile loop. Following the hike, hot chocolate will be served around a cozy fire at the pavilion overlooking Lake Ontario.
SUNY Oswego’s Rice Creek Field Station will provide some financial assistance to a limited number of children interested in its summer programs, Exploring Nature and Conservation Field Studies. The scholarship applications, available for printing at oswego.edu/ricecreek/programs, require that children be eligible for free or reduced lunches and have a copy of the award verification from the school district. The information is confidential, and will not be shared.
Libby is a petite black and white cat about one and a half years old. She is small but has a big “purrsonality.” She loves to stand on her hind legs and welcome her people home. When her foster mom comes downstairs to play with her, she stands up and swipes her paw from the top of her head then out to her mom . . . almost like she’s saluting.
The Coalition to Combat Adolescent Substance Abuse is holding its meetings at Farnham Family Services. They have begun to develop and will implement strategies and policy changes that are focused on reducing identified risk factors and increasing identified protective factors. They are seeking federal grant money to assist the cause.
The victim, a male in his mid 20s, reported that he was jumped by two men who beat him and then stole his phone and cash. Initial investigation revealed suspects whose vehicle was stopped by responding New York State Police unit. After further investigation and interviews, two men were arrested and charged in the robbery.
Assemblyman Will Barclay said today (Jan. 28) that whoever the new Speaker will be, he or she must embrace reforming the Assembly rules and help pass meaningful ethics reform. Barclay said the time is now for change in light of last night’s announcement that Sheldon Silver will resign as Speaker amidst the charges of public corruption.
With an icicle dip, chili walk, ice fishing, snowshoe run, and sled dog competitions, Oswego County’s northern communities will celebrate winter’s rugged beauty in a flurry of activities the weekend of Feb. 6, 7 and 8. The public is welcome to join in.
