The Port City officially lit up for the holidays on Saturday. Hundreds of people throughout the day enjoyed the first-ever Light Up, Oswego! The new community wide all-day event, welcomed the holiday season in Oswego at myriad locations. Events and activities began at 10 a.m. and continued until around 7:30 p.m. after Santa had greeted hundreds of youngsters in City Hall.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh reports that deputies have charged a Central Square man in connection with a robbery of a Salina restaurant that led police on a high-speed chase that ended in Oswego County. The suspect allegedly lead police on a high-speed chase, with his two young children in the van.
Beginning Jan. 1, Oswego County solid waste transfer stations will be open four days a week. All of the transfer stations will continue to be open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Weekdays hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Oswego firefighters responded to a house fire late Wednesday night. The blaze at an apartment house on East Third Street reportedly left one person dead. “The call at 155 E. Third St. was reported at 10:14 p.m. with units arriving three minutes later to find the upstairs apartment fully involved with fire,”Chief Jeff McCrobie said.
Stormwater from Oswego’s west side sewer will be redirected to bioswales and tree plantings on State Route 48/ West First Street with a grant awarded by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for a Water Quality Improvement Program. The city of Oswego Community Development Office applied for the grant in December 2013. Joseph Martens, commissioner of New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, congratulated Mayor Tom Gillen for the project award of $330,000 for the $414,312 project last week.
Oswego County STOP-DWI coordinator Robert Lighthall announced that Oswego County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving. The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on November 26 and will end on November 30.
The new budget contains a property tax hike of about 1.25 percent. It doesn’t contain any layoffs or any loss of services to city residents. “The economy of the city of Oswego has begun to emerge from the overall financial malaise experienced throughout the country,” the mayor said.

County Legislator Marie Schadt said on Friday that she contacted every emergency agency she could think of after the brunt of the storm Wednesday because she is worried about her 67-year-old friend in Orchard Park, one of the areas hardest hit by the pre-winter storm.
Oswego County is lending some of its snow removal expertise and equipment to the city of Buffalo to assist in the removal of this week’s massive lake effect snowfall. County Legislature Chairman Kevin Gardner approved a request from the State Office of Emergency Management Thursday afternoon for additional snow removal assistance. “We’re used to these types of events and are certainly happy to help them out,” said Chairman Gardner.
