Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents committed to civic responsibility and community engagement, has named SUNY Oswego junior Garrison Kingston winner of a 2014 Newman Civic Fellows Award.
At Monday night’s Common Council meeting, Kevin Caraccioli presented the council with a petition containing more than 520 signatures in support of his proposed amendment to the city charter. Those who signed the petition include people from all political affiliations, young and older residents, small business owners and those with management experience with some of the largest employers in the county, he said.
SUNY Oswego communication studies faculty member Dr. David Moody has received a national award for his work on African-American visual popular culture. Moody, who has taught since 2010 in the broadcasting and mass communication program, earned the Harry Shaw Award on April 18.
Dale Currier, director of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office, has announced that the system of emergency notification sirens surrounding the three nuclear power plants at Nine Mile Point are scheduled to be tested May 5 through 9, between 4 and 8 p.m. No response by the public is required during these tests.
Several groups and individuals rolled up their sleeves over the weekend to help clean up the area. In Oswego, several members of AmeriCorps volunteered to clean up the grounds around the Human Concerns Center on East Fourth Street. AmeriCorps is currently accepting applications and plans to begin interviewing for summer positions in May. A small fishing boat with 3 people in it took on water today (April 27) and capsized in the Oswego River. The incident happened around noon, just north of the Bridge Street bridge as the boat maneuvered in the rapid currents of the river. Luckily, the 3 people in the water today were wearing lifevests and were able to get out of a dangerous situation unscathed, according to OFD.
The city of Oswego Community Development Office has administered a Section 8 Rental Assistance Program for Oswego’s low income renters since 1976. In 2013, the Congress implemented “sequestration cuts” that impacted rental assistance programs across the county, cutting more than 70,000 rental vouchers for families nationwide and exacerbating homelessness in America.

“Visitors can explore the clickable, interactive, color-coded map and learn more about Rice Creek trails and features to plan a visit, find their way along the trails or to document course projects and research,” said Diann Jackson, assistant director of the field station. Jackson said the new map could be customized to show one trail or one habitat at a time, as well as locations of benches, footbridges and other landmarks.
Jamie Enwright’s more than two decades of service to SUNY Oswego as a member of the college’s University Police staff has been recognized with a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service. Enwright said she was “overwhelmed” by the honor when college President Deborah F. Stanley called to tell her of the award.
