On Wednesday at approximately 5:30 p.m., investigators with the Oswego City Police Department’s Anti-Crime Team (ACT) detained two individuals at 437 State Route 104 in the city of Oswego. This was a result of the Oswego City Police Department’s continued efforts to combat the possession and trafficking of illegal drugs. Mexico residents Joshua M. Sprague and Wendi M. Czirr-Sprague were arrested.
As the spring soccer season is under way for many area youth, so begins the second season for children with special needs at the Richard Benjamin Soccer Complex in Oswego. What started out last year as a Girl Scout Silver Project by then seventh grader Claudia Chetney, has now taken off under the direction of Chetney, many other young soccer players and coaches affiliated with Oswego Youth Soccer Association.
The newly created non-profit charitable organization, the Victor Orlando Woolson Foundation, Inc. (VOW Foundation), will hold its very first fundraiser. “We are starting out small and simple with a chicken barbeque at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego,” said president Teresa Woolson. This first fundraiser will be a chicken dinner take-out event held at Lighthouse Lanes from noon – 5 p.m.
La Parrilla is on the move. The restaurant opened in February of 2010 at 118 W. Second St., Oswego, and has been offering patrons with the area’s finest Mediterranean cuisine. In early June, La Parrilla will open in a larger building just about a block north of its current location. “The new place, at 156 W. Second St., near the movie theater, will provide us with more space for our csttomers, greater ambiance and an enhanced wine list,” said owner and chef Ray Jock.
Comprised of a cross-section of law enforcement investigators, child protective services, medical providers, therapeutic professionals, victim support professionals, the probation department, the district attorney’s office, and other human services agencies, the CAC’s Multi-Disciplinary Team maintains a well-coordinated, effective approach to child abuse investigation and prosecution, and service provision to families and individuals affected by child abuse.
Five people are seeking a position on the Oswego City School District Board of Education. Voters will go to the polls on May 20. Submitting petitions and indicating their intention to seek a seat on the Oswego City School District Board of Education are: Thomas Dehm, John Dunsmoor, Brian Haessig, Michael McLaughlin and Samuel Tripp.
At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council voted 3-4 to increase the rental inspection fees. During discussion at last week’s committee meeting it was noted that the city isn’t covering what it costs to perform the inspections. It was suggested to increase the fee to $75 per unit, per three years. The resolution failed, 3-4.
Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents committed to civic responsibility and community engagement, has named SUNY Oswego junior Garrison Kingston winner of a 2014 Newman Civic Fellows Award.
At Monday night’s Common Council meeting, Kevin Caraccioli presented the council with a petition containing more than 520 signatures in support of his proposed amendment to the city charter. Those who signed the petition include people from all political affiliations, young and older residents, small business owners and those with management experience with some of the largest employers in the county, he said.
SUNY Oswego communication studies faculty member Dr. David Moody has received a national award for his work on African-American visual popular culture. Moody, who has taught since 2010 in the broadcasting and mass communication program, earned the Harry Shaw Award on April 18.
