In his letter, he informs Gov. Cuomo of the high taxes and the high water and sewer bills in the Port City. “I wanted to show my concern because I lived in the city most of my life. I’m proud to live in the city of Oswego,” he wrote. “I have had my house for so many years and I want to keep it.”
The cause most likely was due to spontaneous combustion, a condition that has caused a number of fires locally in the past few years, according to Jeff McCrobie, fire chief.
The Greater Pulaski Community Endowment Fund (Pulaski Fund) raised $13,015 in individual and business contributions during its annual fall fundraising campaign. The John Ben Snow Memorial Trust gave a generous match helping the fund raise a total of $25,780 making the 2013 campaign the fourth most successful fundraiser in thirteen years.
Included in the funding is more than $60,000 for the Oswego City School District to expand its full-day pre-kindergarten program. For use with community learning center programs, the Fulton City School District was awarded nearly $47,000 and the Watertown City School District will receive nearly $108,000.
SUNY Oswego’s online MBA tied for 14th among online graduate business programs — the highest of any institution in the state, according to U.S. News’ 2014 “Best Online Degree Programs: Business (Graduate)” rankings published Jan. 8.
Getting relief from all the unfunded mandates is a priority for local officials. No one wants to raise taxes, city officials said. However, the mandates are making it tough not to, they added. “As long as we have a dialogue going, (the governor) knows where we stand. We need help from Albany,” Oswego’s mayor added.
A nearly $11,000 stipend for the boys’ varsity track coach came under fire at Wednesday’s committee. An audience member pointed out it is almost $5,000 higher than what any other coach receives in the district. The committee took no action on the resolution. It will likely return to the floor of the committee in February.
The committee approved removing the Midtown Plaza lots from the policy and OK’d other housekeeping details. They also tabled a change order request. The councilors want more details before paying for something one councilor says isn’t the city’s fault.
Due to new water contracts, increased sales, unmetered customers and the desire for new industries, the Port City’s water plant is approaching capacity, the manager said. He is asking the council to consider approving replacing some 40-year-old equipment among other upgrades.
