Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang said, “We received the test results this afternoon from several water samples that were taken on Tuesday, June 11. They show that the water is now safe for residents to drink and to use for cooking.”
Operation Oswego County, Oswego County’s designated economic development agency, was recently awarded “best in class” for its 2011 Annual Report by the New York State Economic Development Council’s 2013 marketing and promotional materials award competition. The report profiles development projects and summarizes capital investment and job creation facilitated by OOC in 2011.
For more than 30 years, police officers throughout Oswego County have participated in the annual “Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.” On Monday, officers representing the cities of Fulton and Oswego, the county, state police and Oswego State University carried on the tradition. The LETR for Special Olympics is the movement’s largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world.
Residents of the villages of Sandy Creek and Lacona are being advised by the Oswego County Health Department to continue to boil all water used for drinking and cooking due to a water main break in the municipal water system last week. This order has been extended until tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12.
At about 10 a.m. on June 11, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a personal injury accident that occurred at 19 Waterview Road in the Town of Oswego. When deputies arrived, they found that 44-year-old John David Halstead of Fulton had been in the process of dismantling a mobile home when the roof of the home suddenly fell on him.
“As part of a long-term surveillance program, our staff collects mosquito specimens from a number of trap sites around the county,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “This year, we will continue to monitor the same areas that had high mosquito activities last year.” Two of these locations are the Toad Harbor and Big Bay swamp areas in the town of Hastings, which are often the first places where EEE appears each summer.
The Common Council voted 4-3 in favor of eliminating four positions from the fire department. The positions are currently vacant, but the firefighters’ union says they were in the 2013 budget to be filled to keep the staffing at safe levels. If they can’t work things out with the city, the union may file a grievance against the city to return the positions to the budget.
Close to 200 people gathered Monday for Operation Oswego County’s 61 annual business meeting and to recognize the progress the organization has made in the last 12 months and to honor those who are working to improve the county’s economic future. Three business organizations, a successful entrepreneur and a long-standing economic development advocate were also honored.
Two passengers in the buggy were transported by ambulance to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for possible head trauma. The driver of the car was ticketed for for Failure to use due care approaching a horse.
In the spring of 2009, the Port City approved a plan that would enhance the waterfront while also helping to curtail the blight of graffiti that had been encroaching into the the Riverwalk west area. Over the years, young, volunteer artists created colorful artworks along the riverwalk. Just recently, some have been damaged by vandals with black spray paint.
