On Oct. 1, Oswego City Police executed a search warrant at 145 W. VanBuren St. As a result of the investigation, Oswego Police arrested 19-year-old Amber L. Wheeler and 20-year-old Stephanie N. Burnett, both of 145 W. VanBuren St.
The first public meeting to address the city of Oswego Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) nomination study will be held at the City’s Common Council Chamber at City Hall, 13 W. Oneida Street, today, October 4th at 6 p.m.
They were selected to perform at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the premier high school football game in the country. It will be held on January in the Alamodome in San Antonio. Only 125 band and color guard members from around the country are selected. In the past four years, Oswego has had seven representatives.
Applications to attend SUNY Oswego set a 21st century high again this year, but the college held to its quality standards and largely kept the numbers of undergraduate admissions in line with those of recent years.
This year’s winner of the CNY Oswego Great Pumpkin Weigh Off was Matt VerSchneider of Freeville with a 1,283-pound entry. It would have even bested last year’s winner (Alan Nesbitt’s 1,229.5-pounder). This year saw dozens of entries with seven topping the 1,000-pound plateau and three were more than 1,240 pounds. Besides pumpkins there were plenty of fun and games, music and food for the entire family. And, of course, pumpkins – lots and lots of pumpkins. In second place was Andy Wolf (1,274 pounds, followed by Walter Merriam (1,241.5) and Nesbitt (1,193.5). This year saw dozens of entries with seven topping the 1,000-pound plateau.
As the weather starts turning colder, dozens of cats and dogs are seeking a warm, loving ‘forever home.’ The Oswego Animal Shelter needs your help in finding homes for about 60 cats and 16 dogs. The Oswego County Humane Society has about 80 cats and 10 dogs in foster homes right now.
A craving for some chicken and a penchant for playing poker added up to $1 million recently for an Oswego County resident. Charlene Hopkins stopped at the Mexico Big between her two jobs to pick up some chicken for dinner and used the change to buy some lottery tickets. After scratching off the ticket for a million dollars, she never got around to cooking the chicken.
Thursday’s heavy, continuous rain has caused flooding in many areas around the Port City and trapped more than a dozen anglers in the Oswego River. About 17 fishermen had to be rescued from an island near the Varick Dam on the west side of the river.
The operator of the Varick Hydroelectric Station in Oswego has launched an investigation into the water release that preceded four fishermen being swept down the Oswego River. One of the men has died and another is in critical condition in Oswego Hospital. The city is also conducting an investigation.
