OHS Pair Tapped For All-American Band Honors

all-american band studentsThey were selected to perform at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the premier high school football game in the country. It will be held on January in the Alamodome in San Antonio. Only 125 band and color guard members from around the country are selected. In the past four years, Oswego has had seven representatives.

Scene Around Pumpkin Fest

This year’s winner of the CNY Oswego Great Pumpkin Weigh Off was Matt VerSchneider of Freeville with a 1,283-pound entry. It would have even bested last year’s winner (Alan Nesbitt’s 1,229.5-pounder). This year saw dozens of entries with seven topping the 1,000-pound plateau and three were more than 1,240 pounds. Besides pumpkins there were plenty of fun and games, music and food for the entire family. And, of course, pumpkins – lots and lots of pumpkins. Great Pumpkins Abound In Port City

This year’s winner was Matt VerSchneider with a 1,283-pound entry. It would have even bested last year’s winner (Alan Nesbitt’s 1,229.5-pounder). In second place was Andy Wolf (1,274 pounds, followed by Walter Merriam (1,241.5) and Nesbitt (1,193.5). This year saw dozens of entries with seven topping the 1,000-pound plateau.

Saturday Night Poker Player Wins $1 Million NY Poker Lottery Jackpot

A craving for some chicken and a penchant for playing poker added up to $1 million recently for an Oswego County resident. Charlene Hopkins stopped at the Mexico Big between her two jobs to pick up some chicken for dinner and used the change to buy some lottery tickets. After scratching off the ticket for a million dollars, she never got around to cooking the chicken.

Brookfield, City Launch Probe In Water Release Incident

The operator of the Varick Hydroelectric Station in Oswego has launched an investigation into the water release that preceded four fishermen being swept down the Oswego River. One of the men has died and another is in critical condition in Oswego Hospital. The city is also conducting an investigation.
