OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego High School was one of four Central New York schools the state removed from its list of schools in need of improvement (SINI).
Four others, including Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square and Maroun Elementary in Phoenix, were added to the list, the State Education Department announced Thursday.
“We are thrilled to receive the wonderful news that the high school is no longer on the State Improvement list. The teachers and administration worked hard to look at root causes and to develop plans for improvement efforts. The teachers and teacher leaders should be congratulated for focusing on best practice,” said Cathy Chamberlain, assistant superintendent for curriculum. “As a district we will continue our efforts for improving the teaching and learning environment for all of our students as we move our district from good to great!”
Also taken off the list were Liverpool and DeRuyter high schools and Smith Road Elementary in North Syracuse.
A total of 53 schools and 3 districts that were identified for the 2009-10 school year have been removed from the improvement list because they made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years in all areas for which they were identified.
An additional 14 schools that were in improvement status during 2009-10 have closed or are in the process of closing.
AYP is the minimum level of performance schools and districts must achieve each year and is based on student participation and performance on state assessments.
Sixty-four schools identified this year made AYP, and are eligible to be removed from the improvement list if they make AYP again next year.
