Crumbling Port Breakwall Wins Money For First Step Towards Repair

The breakwall, as seen from the Port of Oswego.US Sen. Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday that he has secured $300,000 to design and engineer a plan to repair the 100 year old breakwall. Schumer believes that the breakwall is in danger of collapsing. That would shut down the port, which has become a busy hub of shipping activity that generates an estimated $6 million in economic benefit to the region.

DEC Announces Settelment for Natural Resource Damages at Novelis Aluminum Plant

 Novelis Corporation will pay $220,000 to settle natural resource damages claims centering on the company’s aluminum manufacturing facility adjacent to Lake Ontario in Scriba. The settlement relates to polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination in several areas bordering the Novelis facility, including natural and man-made wetlands, man-made ponds and a stream.

Forum Highlights Services For Youth

Brian Chetney of the Youth Bureau looks over the informational material on display by one of the other agencies taking part in the youth programs forum.The event, hosted at the Oswego Elks Lodge, provided an opportunity to learn about the many human services programs available to youth in Oswego County. It also showed those present how their agencies could work together. The presentations touched on job training, mentoring, juvenile justice services, recreation, and much more.

Marching Bucs Parade Of Champions Champion

The enthusiastic, yet tired Marching Bucs returned to Oswego on Sunday night after winning the JMU Parade of Champions Class AA crown. Drum Major Amber Scruton and Assistant Drum Major Billy McSweeny proudly display the trophy with (left to right) Board of Education member Sean Madden, Marching Bucs Band Director Stephen Defren and Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist.Oswego High School Marching Buc Drum Major Amber Scruton knew it was a good show. The judges at James Madison University apparently agreed with the OHS senior as “The Pride of Oswego” received an 82.20 in Class AA competition to capture first place in the annual “Parade of Champions” in Harrisonburg, Va., on Saturday.
