The Oswego Fire Department was dispatched at 1:07 p.m. today (June 17) to a fire alarm system activation at the Morningstar Residential Care Facility, located at 17 Sunrise Drive on the west side of Oswego. OFD personnel reported that the fire was out on their arrival and they went to work checking for fire extension, ventilating smoke, and checking on staff and residents.
Laura Brazak, of 830 County Route 20, announces her candidacy for the 20th District of the Oswego County Legislature. Laura is a first-time candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Laura, a resident of the Town of Oswego for the past three years, is optimistic about the county’s future.
Superintendent Ben Halsey updated the board of education Tuesday night regarding three county-wide programs. The Oswego superintendent is part of a sub-committee developing programs with CiTi to better enhance and collaboratively serve the different student populations in the districts in the county. There were three programs in particular the group was focusing on. Two of the three are up and running.
Mayor Tom Gillen has announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is preparing new coastal studies and risk analysis for Oswego County. The engineering firm Risk Assessment Mapping and Planning Partners (RAMPP) will be performing land use reconnaissance surveys for these new coastal studies. These studies are for the entire shoreline along Lake Ontario within Oswego County.
While the parking garage at the Midtown Plaza in Oswego is closed for construction, Oswego County Opportunities would like to remind community members that it is business as usual at the agency’s office in the lower level of the plaza. Open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., OCO’s Midtown office hosts a number of the agency’s human services programs.
A total of $345,000 had been budgeted and passed for Fire Department overtime. That was divided into $145,000 for department overtime; $100,000 for codes and the remaining $100,000 was moved to an overtime contingency account. The chief requested the contingency funds be returned to his department’s budget. The full council will vote on it at its next meeting.

An elderly female suffered serious injuries today (June 15), as a result of a motor vehicle collision on Murray Street. The single-car accident occurred around 3:15 p.m., in front of 27 Murray St., on the west side of Oswego. Oswego Fire Department officials said that the vehicle was traveling south, left the road and struck a tree.
Assemblyman Will Barclay recently presented a resolution to the Cancer Screening Services program coordinators proclaiming June 7 as “Cancer Survivor’s Day” throughout New York State.
On Tuesday, June 16, the city of Oswego Department of Public Works will close East Utica Street between Duer and East Eighth streets. to all through traffic starting at approximately 7 a.m. The closure will remain in effect until repairs to water distribution valves are completed.
Full volume tests of the new emergency notification sirens recently installed by Exelon Generation and Entergy Nuclear in the 10-mile emergency planning zone around Nine Mile Point will take place from late June through August.
