Karl Haist set a state record at Oswego’s Great Pumpkin Fest and then broke it the following day. A Central Square administrator was named principal at OHS. Al Roker returned to SUNY Oswego. John Canale Drive was unveiled. A Marching Buc was named to the Army’s All-American Band.
A wish was granted for princess Sadie Wilson. She and her twin sister, Layla, were going to Disney World, thanks to local volunteers for the Make A Wish Foundation. Bill Crist, superintendent of Schools for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, was named president of the United Way’s board of directors. The Oswego council sought to silence sirens on the river.
Also in August, dozens Rallied In Support of Gary Thibodeau. The school district appointed two principals. Midway Drive-In continued on the road to recovery. And, the Common Council approved dedication of the street between City Hall and Pathfinder Bank as “John M. Canale Drive.”

A new state law which prohibits consumers from placing unwanted computers, televisions and other electronic equipment in the trash will take effect Jan. 1. In Oswego County, residents can continue to bring unwanted electronic waste items to the Oswego County Solid Waste transfer stations and recycling drop-off centers.

Voters approved the city school district’s budget and elected two incumbents and a newcomer to the board of education.
Also in April, the county clerk was invited to Russia. The Oswego Board of Education OK’d the budget, but the public still had some issues with it. And more than 125 people braved the freezing waters of Lake Ontario to support Special Olympics.
Through the summer months public attendance at local board meetings spiked as village of Phoenix residents’ frustrations over dirty, smelly water were voiced during sometimes contentious public comment periods and discussions during the meetings.
