Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today (Nov. 18) declared a state of emergency for the following counties as a severe winter storm continues to bring snowfall across the state: Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Franklin, Genesee, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Wyoming, and contiguous counties.

“We have driven students who work hard and strive to reach for honors,” said Scott Ciesla, Oswego High School Marching Band Director. “It also helps to have excellent staff in the district I teach in, as well as an excellent marching band staff. It is really about the sum of the parts. It’s about building an expectation and atmosphere where students can and will succeed.”
Continuing her strong commitment to local libraries, State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced $50,000 in special funding to make much needed repairs and upgrades to the Mexico Public Library.
“These grants are vital to preserve older, historic libraries like ours and they allow us to add and enhance services for our many patrons. We greatly appreciate Senator Ritchie’s efforts to secure this funding and we are thankful for her continued support for local libraries,” said Julie Forbes, president of the Mexico Public Library.
The State Employees Federal Appeal committee has once again teamed up with Oswego State Athletics to hold the annual canned food and toy drive and holiday skate events. On Friday and Saturday, canned goods and toys will be collected at both the men’s and women’s hockey games. The women take on Potsdam Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. The men play in a SUNYAC faceoff against Brockport 7 p.m. on Friday.

Theresa Makin and Terry Todd recently spearheaded the Paws-of-Plenty Harvest Dinner at the Ancient Order Of Hibernians. All proceeds benefited the Animal Shelter in order to pay for medical equipment for an on-site surgical suite. It will save the Animal Control Department money and help alleviate the animal over-population issues the Port City and surrounding areas are facing, they said.

The Oswego County Salvation Army kicked off its ‘Red Kettle’ campaign recently prior to the Oswego County Legislature’s November meeting at the County Office Building. The campaign is the biggest fundraiser for the Salvation Army and its proceeds go toward serving those in need of assistance. This year’s goal of $106,000 is needed to fund the agency’s operating budget.
What better way to explore the many tastes and textures of Oswego County agriculture than to put it on a plate as part of a hearty dinner? That’s exactly what Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County has done for the past five years during its Oswego County Harvest Dinner. The most recent event was Oct. 3 at The American Foundry in Oswego.
