Committee Weighs Options For County Transfer Stations

Members of the Transfer Station Advisory Committee got some of their questions answered Thursday night. And, they came up with a few new ones as well. Only 15 percent of the Oswego County households us the transfer stations, according to Legislature Chairman Kevin Gardner. That means 85 percent of county residents are subsidizing a service they do not use, he added.

A Cold Case Murder Investigation Continues

July 1, 2014, marks the 30-year anniversary of the date Nancy-Jo Scamurra, a 14-year-old from Amherst, NY, went missing from her home. Her body was found in Lake Ontario in 1984; it wasn’t identified until 2011. Despite the positive identification and continued investigation, the mystery surrounding Ms. Scamurra’s disappearance, murder, dismemberment, and decapitation, remains unsolved.

Man Charged With Additional Felonies After Being Arrested On Indictment Warrants

After a lengthy investigation conducted by the Oswego County Drug Task Force and the city of Fulton Police Department, Jason Wayne Knopp (a/k/a John Slaughta), was arrested on Monday (June 23), on a sealed indictment warrant issued by Oswego County Court. The indictment charges Knopp with three counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a Class B Felony.

City Of Oswego Community Development Office Announces Affordable Housing Corporation Grant

The New York State Homes and Community Renewal Office of Community Renewal has announced that the city of Oswego has been awarded a $400,000 grant from the Affordable Housing Corporation.
The city will receive the maximum amount available to a small city to rehabilitate 18 units of existing housing in Oswego.

Fizz! Boom! Read! Oswego Bookmobile Releases Summer Schedule

Fizz! Boom! Read! a science-based theme, is the overall theme for Oswego Bookmobile’s 2014 summer program. Each week of the summer from July 7 to August 22 has its own theme as well. The bookmobile has scheduled events throughout the summer to promote reading to children. At every site, the bookmobile will provide children under the age of 18 with a snack and a free book.

Amy Bidwell of SUNY Oswego's health promotion and wellness department recently published research that found massive negative impacts of consuming just 75 grams of sugar -- the equivalent of two 20-ounce cups of soda -- daily, also discovering that physical activity can mitigate some of the high-sugar diet's negative effects.

Amy Bidwell, who teaches in Oswego’s health promotion and wellness department, found that just adding 75 grams of fructose — two 20-ounce lemon-lime sodas — to the daily diet of healthy participants caused massive increases in cholesterol and other markers that can threaten heart and other health. But if the subjects were physically active at the same time, their bodies cancelled out much of the adverse effects.
