Oswego County Clerk Michael C. Backus will visit Russia for 12 days in May as part of an international exchange program organized by the American Council of Young Political Leaders and sponsored by the US State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. He plans to share information about Oswego County fishing and manufacturing, along with state tourism opportunities like the Baseball Hall of Fame. SUNY Oswego, Le Moyne College and Syracuse University will also be topics of discussion.
The original law was challenged more than a year ago. The council has since had the state of New York go through the legislation and made it legal; so the local language is consistent with state statue and other law. It now will regulate taxi cabs, taxi cab drivers, will require individuals to submit to a host of questions regarding their background, according to the council president.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today (April 14) that Felix Schoeller, a German-based global producer of specialty paper, has successfully negotiated a new contract with a major manufacturing company, resulting in the relocation of a paper conversion operation from out of state to the existing facility in Pulaski. The expansion project doubles the Pulaski facility output, and has retained and created 290 full-time and contract positions.
A vehicle observed parked on the lawn within the first 25 feet of the property line in the front yard of a residence violates Section 280-55 (B) of the City of Oswego Zoning Ordinance. This parking must cease immediately. A vehicle observed parked on the grass between the curb and sidewalk or between the sidewalk and property line in public space at a residence violates Section 257-26 (D)(2) of the City Code. This parking must cease immediately.
County Fire Coordinator Donald Forbes reminds residents of the annual statewide ban on all open burning. The ban took effect March 16 and remains in effect through May 14, during the high fire-risk period. It makes it illegal to use a burn barrel or open pits as a means for incinerating trash. The burning of leaves is also banned in New York State.
The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is accepting applications for mini-grants for 2014. Not-for-profit community organizations can apply for up to $1,000 for activities for youth during hours when school is not in session.
County residents will be able to safely dispose of unwanted chemicals, pesticides, and other hazardous waste products beginning May 3 at the Oswego County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility. Located at the Bristol Hill Landfill, Volney, the facility will be open Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m. from May through September.
The incident was reported to Oswego County 911 around 8:30 p.m. as a kitchen fire. Fire officials declared the fire under control minutes later, with damage limited to the kitchen area. Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly an hour ventilating smoke from the structure. One person was reportedly treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.
