Not that many years ago, scores of anglers stood shoulder to shoulder in the Oswego River reeling in lunkers. Over the years, due to several factors, fishing in the Oswego River has petered out considerably. Now, city officials are looking for ways to revive the sport.
State Police in Fulton are investigating a personal injury accident that occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. Tuesday on State Route 3 in the town of Hannibal. The driver was taken to Oswego Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said.
Over the Labor Day weekend, the Oswego City Police Department deployed additional personnel to address quality of life concerns in residential neighborhoods. This detail consisted of marked, unmarked and foot patrols. A total of 33 individuals were arrested as a result of the detail.
The Friends of Fort Ontario will host an Arts, Crafts, and Kites Festival Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the spacious and historic grounds outside the old fort. Admission to the festival is free while normal admission fees will apply to those who wish to tour the old fort. Kite experts from around the United States and Canada and noted kite historian Thom Shanken will be on hand to assist kite fliers of all ages and abilities.

The new state-of-the-art building is located in the center of campus, right next to Campus Center and the building it’s replacing, Snygg Hall. Shineman Hall is named after the late Dr. Richard S. Shineman who was a professor of chemistry at SUNY Oswego from 1962 to 1988. He was the founding chair of the chemistry department.
State Police were called to the Red Cross Parking lot across from the New York State Fairgrounds shortly after 2 p.m. this afternoon (Sept. 2) for a reported animal cruelty case. When troopers arrived, they observed a male standing over a black Labrador canine who was seizing and barely breathing. Troopers attempted to cool the dog with water and ice.
Fort Ontario State Historic Site will host the Great Lakes Seaway Trail War of 1812 Traveling Quilt Show from Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2 to Sunday, Sept. 29. Twenty-six of the finest newly-made examples of 1812-period quilts will be on display in Officer’s Quarters One inside the old fort. Every quilt in the exhibit has a story-card attached with interesting details about the quilts and quilt-makers from 11 different states and three Canadian provinces.
Despite the humidity, August 2013 goes into the record books as cooler than normal. That’s right, cooler, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. The average temperature last month was a pleasant 68.6 degrees, but that is 0.8-degree below average. Gregway said, “Temperature wise it wasn’t a bad month. The humidity was a little tough at times.”
