The Oswego County Alternatives to Incarceration Advisory Board voted Monday afternoon to move ahead with approving the county’s ATI plan. Deborah Meyer, director of the county’s Probation Department, chaired the meeting.

On Aug. 3, in cooperation with Oswego County Soil & Water Conservation District, Oswego County Environmental Management Council and SLELO PRISM, a group of volunteers from the Oswego Canoe/Kayak Club participated in the hand pulling of the invasive water chestnut at the historic canal and guard lock section near Battle Island on the Oswego River.
The H. Lee White Museum and Maritime Center celebrated Oswego’s first-ever “Lighthouse Weekend” in recognition of the West Pierhead Lighthouse. The event also commemorated the birthday of the US Coast Guard on Aug. 4 as well as the celebration of Lighthouse Day on Aug. 7 and the creation of a United States Postal stamp, which features an image of the Oswego Lighthouse.
Dozens of friends and family turn out to honor the Oswego Speedway legend. Two brand new signs, each with two different pictures of Jim Shampine’s famous race car, were unveiled at both ends of the road named in his honor. Pathfinder Bank, Romey Caruso (whose family formerly owned the Oswego Speedway for decades), the current speedway owners, the city and others all pitched in to help replace the signs, according to Mike D’Amico who spearheaded the project.
The signs were purchased through state funds sponsored by State Senator Patty Ritchie and are part of the “Fight the Bite” public education program to help raise awareness about West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. In all, 276 signs were provided to public health departments in Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Madison counties.
Kristi Eck, education program director at Say Yes to Education in Syracuse, will join the administration of SUNY Oswego at the start of the fall semester Aug. 26 as interim chief of staff for President Deborah F. Stanley.

It wasn’t so much the hot humid days that pushed July’s average temperature above normal. It was the sultry nights, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the national Weather Service. The average temperature last month was 73.0 degrees. That’s 2.2 degrees higher than average, Gregway said. One overnight low came in at 77 degrees.
SUNY Oswego has become the latest college accepted for the CFA Institute’s University Recognition Program, signifying its School of Business’ bachelor of science degree in finance strongly positions graduates to obtain the rigorous and prestigious professional Chartered Financial Analyst credential.
