Today (May 17), marked Volney Elementary’s annual Earth Day Celebration. Earth Day is an all-day event and has been a Volney staple for more than 15 years. “The kids are excited about this day every year,” said Principal Jeff Hendrickson. “It’s tradition. It’s become one of those things that’s expected.”
The board will discuss this matter during a special session at 6 p.m. May 17 in the college’s Business Industry Center in the James T. Walsh Regional Economic Center on the Auburn Campus, 199 Franklin St. Both the board and college president Daniel P. Larson are expected to make a statement at that meeting.
In 2013 Fort Ontario State Historic Site will be open to the public from Saturday to October 13. Visiting hours will be Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The fort will be open seven days a week during the peak of tourist season from June 26 through Labor Day. Admission prices will remain the same as last year.
The Fulton Art Association will present its 40th Annual Art Show and Competition this weekend, May 18 and 19. The show opens Saturday at 10 a.m. and goes until 8 p.m., and again Sunday 2-4 p.m. An artists’ reception will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, providing a venue with several artists available for comments on techniques.
Brief budget and bus proposition programs have been produced by Oswego High School WBUC. Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist and District Clerk Bill Foley discussed the propositions. The programs will air on WBUC (Time Warner Channel 16) during the weekend and through Monday evening, at 5-6 p.m. and 8-9 p.m.

The Fulton Service Clubs (Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary Sunrise) and the Fulton Veterans Council have completed the planning for the 32nd Annual Memorial Day Salute to be held on May 24 and 25. The parade committee has been working for several months putting together the area’s largest parade. The parade date is May 25 and it will start at 10 a.m.
Just in time for the summer boating season, State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has secured $75,000 in state funding to be used for the dredging of the Sandy Pond Channel. Today Senator Ritchie met with local leaders, community members, business owners and members of the Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Association to make the announcement.

On Wednesday, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by members of the New York State Police and the Mexico Fire Department, responded to 119 Spath Road in the town of Mexico for a reported stabbing.
