The massive storm system — a low-grade hurricane that’s blending with a historically low low-pressure system — is expected to bring moderate rains to our area even as it brings heavy rains and flooding to New York City and the Jersey shore.
But the problem for Central New York is not rain; it’s wind. And it’s a twofold problem: The wind will be with us for many hours and it’s coming from an unusual direction.
The American Red Cross is responding across multiple states as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the East Coast. The large and powerful storm could affect as many as 60 million people in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and the Red Cross has workers and relief supplies in place to provide help to people in the path of Sandy.
Each of the 37 individual sirens will be tested between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. between Monday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Nov. 8. The testing on Friday, Nov. 9, will include a full-scale simultaneous activation of all 37 sirens for three to five minutes.
The newly expanded store brings approximately 85 new jobs to the area and opportunities for customers to save money, according to Sue Palmer, store manager. “We are proud to be expanding during the year that Walmart celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first store opening,” Palmer said. “We look forward to serving the people of our community, helping save them money so they can live better.”
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency in New York in preparation for the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy, which may hit New York State in the coming days. A state of emergency mobilizes resources to local governments that otherwise are restricted to state use only and suspends regulations that would impede rapid response.
