SPC Kyle Robert Rookey, 23 died Sunday September 2, 2012, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan while serving in the US Army. Kyle was based out of Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born in Oswego and was the son of George E. Rookey and Carol Sue Slater Akers of Oswego.
The warmth moves out this weekend; Sunday will feel like the start of fall.
Kyle Rookey will be honored this evening (Sept. 7) at Fort Ontario. The candlelight vigil will get under way at 9 p.m. Organizers said they will share stories of Kyle first and then around 9:30 p.m. or so will start the vigil.
“I don’t want her to be forgotten!” said Linda Doty as she talked about a former elementary school student. In 1999 Oswego Middle School seventh grader Kristen Pulver was tragically killed and left this world at a very young age. “Kristen befriended others that didn’t fit in easily, not only in school, but also outside during after-school hours. Kristen didn’t judge others, she was a friend to anyone who needed one,” Doty said.
UPDATED Oswego City School Board of Education member William Myer has announced that he is resigning from his position. He said he wants to ‘pursue other interests.’ He isn’t ruling out a run for the board in the future, however.

A rundown industrial building on Fulton’s west side is on its way back to life after city lawmakers approved a zone change this week. The zone change could lead to the building becoming a woodworking shop and bakery.
Buccaneer Junior-Senior High School officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the students of the school, currently housed in portables behind Oswego Middle School. Overall, from pre-kindergarten to seniors in high school just over 4,100 students commenced the 2012-13 school year in Oswego.
Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County public health director, said he has requested the New York State Department of Health to issue a declaration of “imminent threat to public health” in Oswego County with the intent to conduct aerial spraying of the Big Bay and Toad Harbor Swamp area as soon as possible.
