The heat is on! With hot and humid weather in the forecast this week across the region, AAA Western and Central New York is reminding motorists to be aware of the dangers of hot cars. On average, 38 children (under age 15) die in hot cars every year according to the National Safety Council, which reported 33 such deaths in 2022 and 14 so far in 2023. While an overwhelming majority of these deaths are accidental, such tragedies are often preventable.

For this week’s “Tuesday’s Tips,” the Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning New Yorkers of the danger children and pets face when left in hot cars. As high temperatures are reaching record levels this summer, there is a real and severe danger when leaving children or pets unsupervised in a car even when temperatures don’t “feel” hot. At 60 degrees outside, after just one hour a closed car can get as hot as 105 degrees. During this unprecedented hot weather, the Division recommends exercising precaution and early intervention to help prevent illness and even fatal consequences if a child or an animal is left unattended for a period of time in a hot car.

And although children in every community in the country face hunger during the summer, rural communities are hit especially hard. Proper nutrition is crucial for a child’s growth, development and overall well-being. When a child is hungry it causes significant psychological stress, depressive disorders and it increases the risk of other mental illnesses.
