Absentee Count Narrows Hoffman’s Longshot Chances

Absentee ballot totals were announced Tuesday in four of the eleven counties that make up the 23rd Congressional Disrrict.

The result: Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman narrowed the gap with Democrat Doug Owens by just 214 votes as the results from Oneida, Madison, Hamilton and Fulton counties came in.

Oswego School Board Member ‘Fundamentals Could Save Millions’

Getting back to some fundamental principles could save the Oswego City School District approximately $10 million, a school board member said Tuesday night. With potential mid-year cuts in state aid looming, the district has to find ways to be more efficient and affordable, he said.

Oswego County Residents Can Make Appointments for H1N1 Flu Vaccine

The Oswego County Health Department has received additional H1N1 flu vaccine and will accept calls for appointments on Thursday, Nov. 19, and Friday, Nov. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until all appointments are filled. People who are in priority groups for receiving the vaccine as noted below may call for appointments.

The new interpretive plaque about the battle at Battle Island was recently installed at Battle Island Golf Course. The interpretive panel was designed by Rich LaCrosse of Fort Ontario, with help from the curatorial staff at Peebles Island (near Albany).Ã‚Â It commemorates the little known battle won by 300 colonial bateauxmen under Captain John Bradstreet over 700 French and Indians on July 3, 1756.

After the successful re-enactment on the 250th anniversary of the battle in 2006, it became apparent that an interpretive panel was needed to let people know what happened, LaCrosse noted.

Hoffman: I’m ‘Unconceding’

With the margin of votes between him and Democratic candidate for Congress Bill Owens shrinking, he told conservative radio and TV talk host Glenn Beck Monday that “if I knew this information at the election night, I would not have conceded.”

Committee In Hannibal Will Examine JROTC

Spurred by the military experience of one of its board members, Hannibal’s Board of Education will study whether to set up a Junior ROTC program at the high school.

Board member Randy Siver, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, is advocating the idea. “It’s a great thing,” he said recently.
