City Pool Likely To Stay Afloat In 2010 Budget

<p>Gallagher Pool, in a photo courtesy of the city of Oswego.</p>Supporters of the city’s swimming pool made a big splash in front of the Common Council.In an attempt to save money in next year’s budget, councilors proposed closing the pool. More than 90 people attended a town hall meeting Thursday at the McCrobie Building. Included in that number were dozens of young children, many carrying signs that read: “Don’t be a fool – Don’t close our Pool,” “Swim Lessons Save Lives” and “Don’t Make Me Swim In The River” among other slogans. In an unofficial poll, the seven councilors said they’d support the pool in next year’s budget

Salmon Species Returns To Salmon River For The First Time In A Century

Lake Ontario once held the largest concentration of freshwater Atlantic salmon in the world. Overfishing, deforestation, pollution and damming of tributaries all but killed off the fish by the late 1800’s. The fish survived in the rivers of New England for decades longer, but when a fish called the alewife was accidentally introduced to the region’s waters, the Atlantic salmon died off.

Scene Around Town: Sunset On Lake Ontario

A longtime reader sends us this pretty postcard from his vacation along the Lake Ontario shore near Port Ontario.  He writes, “We’ve had poor sunsets the last few days because of the extreme heat and humidity.  But last night, after the storms blew through (and missed us), we finally got a pretty sunset.”

Can’t argue with that.

Scriba Teens Train With, Assist Firefighters

<p>Derek Natoli (RAM) is repelling while First Assistant Chief Lora Wehrmann watches from below.</p>Many youngsters have dreams of one day becoming a firefighter. For a group of teen-agers in Scriba, that dream is becoming a reality. They all have part-time or full-time jobs. Some are taking summer classes to get ahead of the game and all are giving much of their free time to the Scriba Volunteer Fire Department.
