After more than a decade on the Oswego County Legislature, current chairman Russ Johnson was defeated Tuesday by a first-time challenger. Political newcomer Louella LeClair defeated Johnson at the polls Tuesday almost 2 to 1, securing 500 votes to Johnson’s 253 in the race for the 25th Legislative District.
With the election results in hand, Republicans in the city of Fulton had much to celebrate Tuesday evening. With an overwhelming margin of voter support, Ron Woodward will return to the helm of city hall in 2008, accompanied by five Republican aldermen. Longtime incumbent Robert Weston returns, too, becoming the Fulton Common Council’s lone Democrat once again.
By a 4-3 vote the board approves a five-year deal with the Oswego Classroom Teachers’ Association, which includes a 4% raise each year. The three opponents say they voted no because they didn’t have all their questions regarding the pact answered.
The proposal includes closing Minetto Elementary and constructing an addition at OMS to house fifth and sixth graders.
According to Tuesday’s unofficial vote, only one Democrat has survived on the Oswego Common Council. And, even if absentee votes save another incumbent Democrat, theRepublicans would still have a 5-2 majority.
