Oswego Council Tweaks, OKs 2019 Budget

After a handful of small tweaks, the Common Council unanimously approved the 2019 spending plan for the Port City. The budget contains the first reduction in city property taxes for city residents in 20 years. Mayor Billy Barlow’s budget proposal reduced the general tax rate from $15.67 per thousand dollars of assessed value in 2018 to $15.33 in 2019. The council’s reductions trimmed it to $15.28. It goes from a 2.11% reduction in city property taxes in the 2019 Operating Budget, to a 2.41%.

Nearly 300 Paddle Through Locks of Oswego River Canal

Nearly 300 paddlers took to the Oswego River Canal on Aug. 18, traversing through four locks and ending in Oswego at Lock 8 near the entrance to Oswego Harbor. This year’s annual Paddlefest was organized by the H. Lee White Maritime Museum.

Exelon Generation’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 2 automatically shut down at 12:33 a.m. today (August 27) after the main generator came offline. The unit shut down as designed and there is no concern for public health or safety. The cause is under review by station personnel.

Menter Ambulance Services has bought or acquired several properties adjacent to the Fulton central headquarters location at 404 Ontario St. The building, currently 5,600 sq. ft., will nearly triple in size to accommodate staff and equipment having doubled since 2013.

A regiment of the King’s army was set upon shortly after 10 O’clock this morning by a group of rebellious colonists while walking in East Park. The Continental Army attacked the British in the park on Bridge Street in Oswego. The attack forced the Loyalists to retreat and fighting continued up East Fourth Street to the gates of the British-held fort. Rebel troops launched a full-scale assault on the fort Saturday afternoon.

Richland Woman Dies In ATV Crash

On Friday (August 24) at approximately 9:44 p.m., the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to an ATV accident on County Route 2, approximately two miles west of County Route 17, in the town of Redfield. The operator and sole passenger was identified as 52-year-old Diane L. Graham of Richland.
