Committee OKs Mayor’s Homeless Proposal

At its meeting Monday night, the Administrative Services Committee approved the mayor’s request for a $25,000 budget amendment. The funds will be used to contract with Oswego County Opportunities to perform street canvassing throughout the city of Oswego from August 1 to December 31 in an effort to combat homelessness in the Oswego community. The full council will now consider the matter at its next meeting.

Syracuse Man Arrested On Sex Abuse Charges

On July 10, State Police arrested Mitchell Pallone, 33, of Syracuse, for Forcible Touching (A – misdemeanor), Sex Abuse 2nd degree (A – misdemeanor) and Endangering the Welfare of a Child (A -misdemeanor). Pallone is accused of having forcible sexual contact with a girl less than 14 years old on July 8 in the town of Richland.

County Taking Applications for Veterans Manufactured Housing Replacement Program

The Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning is accepting applications for its Veterans First Manufactured Housing Replacement Program until Aug. 17. The department was awarded funds last fall to implement a manufactured housing replacement program for eligible households.

Documentary Preserves Cousins’ Memories Of Oswego’s Safe Haven

A SUNY Oswego faculty member, Juliet Aires Giglio wants to share a piece of her family’s history with the world. The story has international appeal. The subjects of the story are Rikica Giglio, 81 (formerly Rikica Levi) and David Levi, 81 (first cousin to Rikica and her sister, Ella Levi, 73, who was born at the Fort Ontario Safe Haven site March 12, 1945). The stories the Levis tell are personal for Giglio — Rikica Levi is her husband’s mother; David, his cousin once removed. “If Safe Haven had not been available for the Levis, my husband (Keith Giglio) would not be here,” Giglio told Oswego County Today.

County Debates, Approves Partnership Plan With City

The Oswego County Legislature had a lengthy debate Thursday night regarding a plan which will help ensure safe housing opportunities for renters in the city of Oswego. Much of the debate centered on who would enforce the plan and what it would cost county taxpayers. In the end, the resolution was approved 22-1-2. Marie Schadt cast the lone nay vote. Legislators John Martino and Shane Broadwell were excused.
