Fulton Class of 2018 Includes 93-Year-Old Veteran, Teen Undergoing Chemotherapy

Along with G. Ray Bodley High School seniors, a 93-year-old war veteran and a senior staying at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital while undergoing chemotherapy treatment are among Fulton’s class of 2018 graduates. Fulton City School District administration first presented World War II veteran Norman Smith with an honorary high school diploma at a ceremony at St. Luke’s Nursing Home. Administration then brought a surprise ceremony to Alicia Carroll, a G. Ray Bodley honor student graduating with a Regents Diploma with advanced designation who was unable to walk at graduation due to chemotherapy treatment at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.

The last day as a high schooler also served as the last day of chemotherapy treatment for Alicia Carroll, who received a special, bedside GRB graduation ceremony at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.

“After high school, chemo was a piece of cake.” That message that was found atop of Alicia Carroll’s graduation cap also served as a reminder for her to never give up when things are tough. Her battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma may have stopped her from walking across the stage this weekend with her fellow G. Ray Bodley High School Class of 2018 graduates, but it has never held her back in becoming successful.

Former Fulton City School District student Norman Smith has waited his entire 93.5 years of life to fulfill a dream: graduating high school. FCSD Superintendent Brian Pulvino and G. Ray Bodley High School Principal Donna Parkhurst were proud to present Smith with an honorary diploma the day before GRB’s very own graduation.

Mayor Billy Barlow announced a $225,000 project enhancing the Oswego Harbor Trail along Breitbeck Park and the Oswego lake front in the city of Oswego.
