Scouts, Elks Retire Flags At Fort Ontario
Most people believe the right way to retire an American Flag is to burn it – whole. However, that is not entirely correct. On Saturday, historic Fort Ontario hosted several representatives of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Oswego Lodge #271 as well as a large contingent of Girl Scout troops 10566 and 10567. Nearly two dozen members of the public were also in attendance.
Economic Development Organization Presents Annual Activity Summary, Achievement Awards
Operation Oswego County held its 66th annual meeting at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center, in Oswego on Friday, June 15. Barbara Bateman, president of the OOC board of directors, welcomed more than 150 representatives of businesses, government, education, labor and other ally organizations to the meeting. Keynote presenter Tim Hardy, General Manager of Sunoco Agri-Business, shared a video highlighting the 1886 Malt House.
Katko Ushers Landmark Legislation Through Congress To Address Synthetic Drug, Heroin Crisis Plaguing CNY
In a bipartisan vote this morning (June 15), the U.S. House of Representatives passed historic legislation introduced by Rep. John Katko to address the heroin and synthetic drug epidemic plaguing Central New York and communities nationwide. The bill was largely inspired by the advocacy of Oswego mother, Teresa Woolson, who lost her son, Victor, in 2012 when he drowned after using synthetic drugs that he purchased legally in a head shop in Oswego. Since Victor’s death, Teresa has been a tremendous local and national advocate in the fight to outlaw synthetic drugs.
State’s Highest Court Turns Down Thibodeau’s Attempt For New Trial
In a 41-page document Thursday, the Court of Appeals denied Gary Thibodeau’s attempt to get a new trial. Thibodeau is serving a 25 years to life sentence in prison after being convicted of kidnapping Heidi Allen.
County, Silver Star Association Strike A Deal
The county and Sheriff’s Silver Star Association have a new contract in place. The legislature approved the pact at Thursday night’s meeting. It runs from 2018 through 2022.
Lanigan Student Congress Volunteers to “Sparkle-A-Park”
Members of Lanigan Elementary School’s Student Congress each brought a friend and gathered at Fulton’s Patrick Park to clean and beautify the playground. Students in grades third through sixth worked together to remove trash and debris, rake leaves and grass, pull weeds, and plant flowers just as they had previously at Recreation Park.
