Schumer: EPA Plan To Weaken Gas Mileage Standard Will Fuel Even Higher Costs For Consumers

With New York State gas prices hovering around their highest levels in just about three and a half years, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on a conference call with reporters today (June 13), sounded the alarm and urged the Environmental Protection Agency to abandon forthcoming plans to roll back an already-in-place rule that required automakers to nearly double the fuel economy of passenger vehicles, to an average of more than 50 miles per gallon.

Oswego District Recognizes Its Retirees

The Oswego City School District said goodbye Tuesday to more than 535 years’ of experience. The school board recognized the employees who are retiring at the end of this school year. They were each congratulated by Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey and board president Aimee Callen. Following the presentation of certificates, they were treated to light refreshments and congratulations from friends and family.

Mayor Barlow Issues Executive Order Prioritizing Housing for Domestic Violence Victims

Mayor Billy Barlow issued an executive order today (June 12) putting victims of domestic violence in the highest priority ranking category for the housing placement system in the city of Oswego HUD Section 8 Rental Assistance Program. The city of Oswego Rental Assistance Office uses a prioritized ranking system to place individuals on HUD, a system Mayor Barlow and the Oswego Common Council overhauled late last year.

Councilors Updated On Lighthouse Restoration Project

A grassroots effort continues to work to ensure Oswego’s iconic lighthouse shines on for years to come. And, that it is accessible to the public. At Monday night’s meeting, the Oswego Common Council heard an update about the endeavor to restore the lighthouse. “It’s really an honor to work on the lighthouse. It’s a very important symbol of our community,” Mercedes Niess, chair of the restoration committee, told the councilors. “I’m sure you’ve seen the symbol of it everywhere. People in Oswego really identify with that lighthouse.”

Oswego Man Charged With Attempted Murder

On Thursday (June 7) at approximately 2:45 p.m., members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to a possible stabbing outside the DSS building in the village of Mexico. Upon arrival, a male victim was found with a stab wound to the head. The suspect, Steven M. Haynes, of Oswego, was located in the town of Mexico and taken into custody.

Hundreds Turn Out To Christen Oswego’s Dog Park

Moments after the Port City’s newest park was opened, it was filled with scores of canines running happily inside the two enclosures; sniffing all over while making new friends. The dogs, large and small and just about every bred imaginable romped in the playground built just for them – without any altercations. It prompted one pet owner to remark, “If only people could get along as well.” Oswego’s Dog Park is located at 375 Mitchell St., on the city’s east side.
