Oswego St. Baldrick’s Event Seeks Volunteers To Go Bald to Support Childhood Cancer Research

More than 100 “shavees” are expected to shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research, Dan Witmer, event organizer, told Oswego County Today. Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide. And, in the U.S. one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatments too harsh for their developing bodies.

Vacant Oswego House Damaged By Fire

UPDATE: West Bridge Street remains closed between West Eighth Street and Liberty Street. Crews are working to reopen the street soon.
Firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant house on West Bridge Street, between Lathrop and Northwest Ninth streets, early this morning (Feb. 11). There was some major damage to the roof and second floor of the structure. No injuries have been reported.

Public Hearing to Address Ban of Chickens in City Limits, Several Other Proposals

The Fulton Common Council announced a public hearing to be held at the next regular meeting addressing several proposals. The public will have the opportunity to weigh in on six separate proposals. Two proposals are relative to raising animals within city limits as city officials look to amend Chapter 475 “Property Conservation” by adding chickens to the list of animals prohibited from living within city limits. “If we don’t have chickens, we wouldn’t have to worry about them running on the sidewalk,” Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. said. Several other proposals will be up for discussion.

The Fulton Recreation Center has entered the Kraft Hockeyville contest for the chance to win $150,000 in rink upgrades and the opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game. The contest relies heavily on community support, utilizing a Community Rally Page for members of the community to earn rally points toward scoring in the judging phase of the contest. Until March 11, community members are able to garner “Rally Points” by writing stories, adding pictures and videos, writing a note, reacting to others posts, or sharing Fulton’s Rally Page on Twitter.

Schumer: Bipartisan Funding Bill Is ‘A Major Win For New York State’

On a conference call today (Feb. 7) with reporters, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced that he successfully negotiated a bipartisan and historic agreement that will significantly increase federal investments on key priorities for New York State. As the Senate Democratic Leader, Schumer led the effort in securing an increase in funds for programs that will help middle-class New Yorkers, all the way from upstate Buffalo to the east end of Long Island.

Fulton Council Tackles Busy Agenda

The Fulton Common Council quickly moved through a busy agenda at Tuesday’s (Feb. 6) regular meeting including a resolution of respect, property sale, requests for proposals, several appointments, and the winning bid announcement for the construction of the city’s new salt storage shed. Boy Scout Troop 715 attended the meeting in order to earn merit badges, bringing several young faces to the meeting.
