Commercial truck drivers are in urgent demand in Oswego County. Because of the shortage of qualified licensed commercial drivers, the Oswego County Workforce New York office is working closely with local companies to recruit and help train people to fill vacant positions. Although some drivers still spend “six days on the road” as described in the classic song, working conditions for commercial truck drivers have improved significantly over the past several years.

According to the Oswego Fire Department, an adult male was hospitalized after an overnight incident at Wright’s Landing in Oswego. According to officials, the driver of a white Volkswagen drove out about 100 yards onto the ice at Wright’s Landing sometime before 5 a.m., when the vehicle fell through and sank. The victim was able to get himself out of the water, and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Firefighters Quell Mary Street Blaze

Oswego firefighters made quick work of a structure fire at 1 Mary Street this morning (Feb. 3). Firefighters located an active fire in the basement and quickly extinguished the flames with a hoseline. The fire was contained to a clothes dryer and the area surrounding it. No injuries were reported.

A group of SUNY Oswego students came to understand India as a land of hope after traveling for two weeks during the college’s winter break to learn from people living in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India. Through the “Practicum in International Development” course, eight students and Christy Huynh, associate director of career services, joined human development faculty member Dr. Mamta Saxena touring Indian cultural sites and villages, and speaking with people in the Kolkata region in connection with a program of St. Xavier’s College.

Help Sought In Identifying Oswego County World War I Casualties

Justin White, Oswego County Historian, along with town and city historians throughout the county, are compiling a listing of those from Oswego County who served in the military and died during World War I. “We are asking for the public’s help in completing this list so that a plaque can be made to honor our county’s fallen World War I veterans,” White said. “We are striving for as complete and accurate a list as we can compile, but we can’t do it without the public’s help. We want to complete this list by March 1.”

MOST Receives Funding From Shineman Foundation for Oswego County Science on the Go

The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) announced it will bring a 45-minute science demonstration to all 78 sixth grade classes in 16 schools throughout Oswego County – a total of nearly 1,400 students.
