OFD Says: Cook Safely This Thanksgiving

According to the U.S Fire Administration, there are more home fires on Thanksgiving Day than any other day of the year. “Most fires on Thanksgiving occur between noon and 4 p.m. – the peak cooking hours,” Oswego Fire Chief Randy Griffin said. “Many of those fires can be easily avoided by staying alert and remaining in the kitchen while cooking.”

County Legislator Karasek Organizes 3rd Annual Can Drive

Oswego County legislator representing the 22nd District, James Karasek organized a non-perishable food drive to benefit local agencies in dispersing food for those in need around the holidays. The Fulton TOPS store, 909 W. First St., is now home to a donation bin for customers to place purchased canned goods and non-perishable food items through the end of December. All collected food will be evenly distributed among Catholic Charities of Oswego County and Oswego County Opportunities’ Nutrition Services to be given to local families in need.

A.G. Schneiderman Announces Settlement With Oswego County To Ensure Health Insurance Coverage For Transgender Employees

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced a settlement with the County of Oswego to ensure that transgender County employees and retirees have access to essential health care coverage through their employer-provided health plan. As part of the settlement, the county has agreed to eliminate from its plan a categorical exclusion on expenses related to gender transition; to offer an affirmative benefit for treatments and procedures for gender transition; and to ensure training and compliance with anti-discrimination laws going forward.

Fulton Family Grows By Five After National Adoption Day

Overseen by judges of the Fifth Judicial District of the New York State Unified Court System and Onondaga County Executive Joannie Mahoney, dozens of local families took their turn to welcome new additions with official adoption finalization proceedings at Syracuse’s 17th Annual National Adoption Day. For one Fulton family, this meant celebrating five children officially welcomed to the Hotchkiss family. Esperanza Hotchkiss, 28, had been fostering two sets of siblings ranging in age from three to 12 and on Friday (Nov 17) she officially took them in as her own.
