Oswego County Health Department Celebrates Public Health Week – the Nursing Division

The Health Department’s Preventive Department takes the lead role in preventing the spread of disease and related disabilities. This is achieved through disease investigations, providing immunizations and monitoring immunization rates, reviewing and following up on lead test reports for county children, collaborating with area health care providers, and educating the public. In 2016, the Oswego County Health Department conducted about 800 investigations related to reportable diseases.

Oswego School Board Plans Budget Workshop

The district was expecting additional state aid, according to Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey. However, due to the late state budget, the district use the (lower aid) figure contained in the Governor’s proposed budget. Dr. Goewey said he will arrange a budget workshop for next week to hash out the 2017-18 budget.

Griffin Sworn In As Oswego’s Fire Chief

The Port City’s new fire chief was officially sworn into office Monday evening prior to the start of the regular committee meetings. Mayor Billy Barlow said he feels the community is lucky to have Chief Randall Griffin at the helm of OFD. The chief’s first day was March 31. He and the mayor had an orientation meeting with the members and staff of the department.

The Oswego County Hospice provides comprehensive care and support to terminally ill individuals throughout Oswego County. The hospice program is primarily a service delivered in the home or in a contracted nursing home, by a team of Hospice professionals and volunteers. “We are proud to be a local hospice, providing local care,” said Judy Lester, Director of Patient Services for the Oswego County Health Department.

Canal Theatrical Proposal Flows Through Committee

Fifth Ward Councilor John Gosek is seeking consideration from the Common Council to authorize the use of funds and public space of the city to support and sponsor the theatrical production of the recounting of the building of the Oswego Canal. At its meeting Monday night, the Administrative Services Committee gave a favorable recommendation to a retooled version of the request the council vice president made a few months ago.
