Council Updated On Lighthouse Restoration

Day by day, the iconic Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse is coming back to life. At Monday’s Common Council meeting, Mercedes Niess updated councilors on the progress made last year by the lighthouse restoration committee and a cadre of volunteers. After nearly 2,200 volunteer hours, the Port City landmark is well on the way to restoration. The first-ever public tours of the lighthouse were offered in 2016.

Volunteers Pitch In For Earth Week, Canal Clean Sweep At Minetto and Great Bear Springs Recreation Area

On Saturday, with Canal Clean Sweep and Oswego County Earth Week occurring together, volunteers from the Minetto Beautification Committee with several others participated in a litter cleanup. On Sunday, recognizing Oswego County Earth Week and Canal Clean Sweep, volunteers worked on projects at Great Bear Springs Recreation Area.

Mayor Barlow Enjoys Helping Community

When he attended Arizona State University, Oswego native William Barlow Jr. never thought he would run for office or be involved in politics. Now, Barlow, the youngest Oswego mayor, said it is a fulfilling feeling helping and serving the people in the Port City. “I never thought I would really run for office or be involved in politics at all,” Barlow said. “But once I got involved being a city councilor, I really enjoyed doing it. I felt like I was making a difference.”

State Police Investigate One-Car Crash In Hannibal

State Police in Fulton are investigating a one-car crash that occurred around 10:30 a.m. today (April 23) on 66 road in the town of Hannibal. Investigation revealed that Nicole E. Smith, 23 from Fulton, was operating her 2007 Toyota Yaris north on 66 road when she drifted across the center of the roadway and struck a guardrail on the Sterling Valley Creek bridge. Smith is listed in critical condition. A 5-year-old child passenger was uninjured in the crash.

Friends of Fulton Parks Honors Earth Day with Canal Clean Sweep

Roughly 30 volunteers came together to work with Friends of Fulton Parks to honor Earth Day (April 22) by cleaning the area along the Oswego River and Fulton’s Veterans Park. As part of the Parks & Trails NY and NYS Canal Corporation’s volunteer event, Canal Clean Sweep, Friends of Fulton Parks organized a local Canal Clean Sweep for the city of Fulton, the fourth year participating. “I’m just proud to be a part of this community where people come together for things like this,” said FoFP founder, Kelley Weaver. Volunteers of all ages cleaned the Canal Landing Marina in Fulton along the Oswego River from the downtown gazebo to the public library.

Lieutenant Governor Offers Budget Highlights, Concern Over Federal Cuts

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul was in the Port City Friday to deliver some regional highlights of the state’s recently passed 2018 budget. She spoke to a large crowd in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Hochul reiterated Andrew Cuomo’s commitment to Upstate and CNY in particular. “It’s not about who has the most clout in the legislature anymore,” she said. “It’s about where the needs are.”

Oswego School Board Approves 2017-18 Budget

Now it’s up to the voters. At a relatively brief school board meeting Friday, the Oswego City School District’s 2017-18 budget was approved 6-0-1. Board member Brian Haessig was excused. Board president Lynda Sereno took part in the meeting via telephone. The district clerk will check to see if Sereno’s “yes” vote is legal. Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey said he is confident the voters will approve the spending plan next month. Recently, the board reduced the tax rate increase in the $82,839,101 budget down to 2.47 percent.
