The Oswego State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams crowned two individual event champions on the first day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Cortland on Friday.
Jimmy Phelps out of Baldwinsville turned around opening night disappointment after ignition problems sidelined the defending track champion. On Friday night, Phelps grabbed the lead at the start of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature and dominated the entire way, serving notice he won’t be easy to dethrone as champion.
Every Laker in the lineup recorded a hit, as the Oswego State baseball team (24-13) ripped 16 hits in a 9-5 win over New Paltz (16-18) in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Lakers face Cortland at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Cortland.
The Oswego State softball team (17-20) saw its season come to an end after falling to No. 3-seed Plattsburgh (24-15), 8-0 in five innings, in an elimination game of the SUNYAC Softball Tournament on Friday.

The Oswego State softball team (17-18) made history in two ways on Thursday morning after it defeated No. 1-seed Brockport (21-15) by the score of 9-0 in five innings. The Lakers not only became the first No. 6-seed to knock off the top seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament, but they also recorded their first SUNYAC post-season win in the process.
Mitchell’s Speedway Press and CJ Ferlito Aggregates will present the opening round of the Novelis Supermodified ‘Road to the Championship’ on May 11. The night’s racing action will be highlighted with a 75-lap main for Novelis Supermodifieds and a 30-lap feature event for the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series.
Herkimer County Community College women’s track and field athlete Mary Lenhart of Hannibal, a Criminal Justice major has been named Region III Female Co- Athlete of the Week. She is a multi-event athlete and just won the Region III Regional Heptathlon and is ranked second in the National rankings for heptathlon, fourth in javelin, ninth in shot and 12th in the 100 hurdles.
