‘Feed The Need To Read’ Event Celebrates International Literacy Day

OSWEGO, NY – Help celebrate the importance of literacy at Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County “Feed the Need to Read” event.

LVOC, in partnership with Oswego County BOCES Adult Education, Success by Six, local book stores and Oswego County libraries, will be raising literacy awareness throughout the month of September.

“Feed the Need to Read” is being held on Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Fort Ontario, along with the Oswego Lions Club third annual Child Safety Day and “Art in the Sky” Kite Festival.

A 1K Family Fun Walk will kick off the day from 11 a.m. – noon.

Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite storybook characters as there will be best costume prizes awarded at the end of the walk.

Participants at the event will be eligible for prize drawings by visiting all vendor tables along the walk and at the literacy tent.

The event is for the whole family and various activities will be presented throughout the day.

Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Sponsors of the event include Attorney Doren Norfleet, NYS United Teachers and Palladium-Times.  Additional sponsors are still needed to cover the cost of the event.

Agencies participating in the event are: Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, Oswego County BOCES Adult Education Literacy, Oswego Public Library, and Success by Six.

Businesses participating in the event are:  Backstreet Books and Bistro, Fidelis Cares, the river’s end bookstore, Time & Again Books & Tea, and United Health Care.

The Art Association of Oswego will be providing literacy-related craft projects.

According to Jane Murphy, LVOC’s executive director, “The month of September is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of lifelong literacy and with all of our help we can become a more literate community.”
