OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Health Department hosts a series of fun and educational events during National Public Health Week from Monday, April 7 to Sunday, April 13. This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week, and these free events are designed to promote health, safety and well-being across the community.
“National Public Health Week highlights the importance of public health and its role in preventing disease, promoting well-being and advancing health for everyone,” said Oswego County Director of Public Health Vera Dunsmoor. “Residents are invited to celebrate all things public health including environmental safety, food and water protection, mental health awareness and community connections.”
The first event is “Bite Back at Cancer” on Tuesday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oswego County Health Department, located at 70 Bunner St., Oswego. The Upstate University Hospital Mammography Van will be on-hand to offer breast cancer screenings. Women aged 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in the past year and are not experiencing breast problems are eligible for a screening. A prescription or order from a healthcare provider is required, but licensed staff can offer a clinical breast exam on-site and provide an order for a one-time screening if needed. Food will be available for purchase from Ji-Woo’s Korean Seoul Food. Registration is encouraged, as slots are limited. To register for a screening, call Upstate Medical University at 315-464-2588 or visit www.upstate.edu/noexcuses/.
On Thursday, April 10, join the health department for free CPR training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will receive hands-on training and CPR certification. The class is open to anyone interested in learning CPR or renewing their certification. There will be an hour-long lunch break, and food will be available to purchase from the Happy Eating Grounds food truck. Registration is encouraged, as the class is limited to ten participants. To register, call Zachary Kingsley at 315-349-3382.
“Mental Health Art Show: Unmasked” also takes place on Thursday, April 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Arts Scene at CNY Arts Center, located at 121 Cayuga St., Fulton. This year’s theme invites artists to express the contrast between their outward appearances and their internal emotions, and the show aims to foster dialogue about mental health across generations. All accepted submissions will be on display. Artwork must be submitted by Friday, March 28 and dropped off by Friday, April 4. To submit artwork, visit the Oswego County Health Department website or contact [email protected] for guidelines.
The fun continues on Tuesday, April 15 for the “Kids Day Beach Party” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Catholic Charities of Oswego County, located at 808 W. Broadway, Fulton. This family-friendly event will feature indoor games, a free photo booth, music, and a chance to win one of the free raffle prizes. Catholic Charities will host a thrift store sale during the event. Parents and children can also learn about public health services offered by the Oswego County Health Department and its partners. Food will be available for purchase from Ma & Pa’s Kettle Corn and Phat Guy Burgers.
