OSWEGO – Fort Ontario State Historic Site and Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum partner to kick off the New Year! The two heritage sites offer a free guided hike at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1 at Safe Haven, 22 Barbara Donahue Drive, Oswego.

The walking tour will be led by Fort Ontario State Historic Site Manager Matthew MacVittie and Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum President Paul Lear. Discussion on the tour will focus on the refugee experience at Fort Ontario from 1944 to 1946.

The hike will last about an hour and includes a refreshment break inside the old stone fort.

Participants should dress for cold and windy lakeside weather conditions and wear appropriate shoes for walking. Restrooms will be available.

In the event of inclement weather, check Friends of Fort Ontario’s Facebook page for updates.
